The best supervillain for supervillainy's sake was Ming the Merciless from the eighties Flash Gordon film. Ming doesn't care about your supervillain trope list. For him it is a supervillain checklist.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-26 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH the problem isn't really that one way or the other of doing supervillains is especially bad. Either way can work.

The problem is that the MCU leans too much to one side. But frankly, the deeper problem is just that you have one movie series with the same overarching team making creative and production decisions and it's tired. The formula has worn down.

I think either way can work well, when done right. I like evil villains who are just straight up evil and enjoying it. I also enjoy nuanced villains with history who turn evil out of a desire for good. I like all sorts of villains, really. They just have to be well written.

My problem with the nuanced villains is that defeating them often feels like it didn't solve the problem. Like that Hellboy 2 villain who wanted to wipe out humans because pollution was killing the elves. He died, and everyone just forgot about the pollution problem.

I feel like the MCU's problem is that one of these type of villain worked a couple of times and they thought "AHA we have the formula!" and didn't think of any additional stuff surrounding all of that such as a good performance from an actor, or good performances from OTHER actors in relation to that character/actor, or writing/direction that actually enhanced that villain's story.

I like both kinds of villains btw but for everyone complaining about excessively sympathetic backstories, there's an equal amount of people complaining about how awful it is that evil for evil's sake exists. I guess writers are often confused about how to balance between those two viewpoints.

i disagree fundamentally (that said, while i think it was key to every theme in black panther, i can see how this useless in other MCU properties), but i will say that i find this really annoying if it's just flavor with slashers. unless it unlocks how to outsmart the serial killer or whatever, i don't care.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-27 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure that I necessarily want Angsty Origin Story, but I do prefer villains who, for one reason or another, don't think their goals are evil. I especially like it if it's written in such a way that it's possible to sit inside their heads and see how their goals make sense. That's much easier to do with written fiction, though.

C'mon...

(Anonymous) 2024-05-27 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I can't take this secret seriously when the freaking Red Skull is used as an example of angsty evil. He's sided with the Nazis! WTF? And the High Evolutionary doesn't have an angsty backstory, either. The dude straight genocided a planet because he forgot a decimal point. Hela wasn't particularly angsty, either. She's literally a murder Mommy!

Bruh, if you want to shit on the MCU shit on the MCU, you ain't gotta make up flaws to justify it.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-27 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
That depends on how realistic the rest of the story is. You're talking superhero and supervillain stories, but even some of those can be too grounded in reality for a "for the evulz" villain to make sense. Realistically, people aren't born evil and don't decide to be evil for no other reason than because they feel like it. They need a reason. The reason doesn't have to be angsty or complex, but it needs to be believable.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-27 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone has reasons for doing what they do. I think that's why I prefer backstories, not just "teehee I'm just EvUl"

(Anonymous) 2024-05-27 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Bucky's not a villain why is he in this photo 😭

(Anonymous) 2024-05-26 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
In the US at least, if it's not STEM (and they often want to do away with S as well) they don't want to teach it. This is why reading comprehension is shitty. Literacy rates in general are going down, too.

No, switching off is a survival tactic of the human brain. Even people living in the thick of things day in and day out will switch off sometimes.

Oh hey, I agree with all of this.

One thing I will say is that I can understand why some people don't enjoy S6, and I can also understand some of the criticism for S6. I love it, myself, but it's pretty striking how much of a shift there is when Marti takes over, in terms of tone and narrative sensibilities. Marti's style works for me, but if it didn't then I can see how the part of the season where she manned the ship would feel not at all enjoyable.
