Why do people hate this show so much? I've not watched it but some of the songs are catchy.

I don't hate it, but I tried to give it a go and realized it was Christian based and bowed out. It does have catchy songs though!

(Anonymous) 2024-06-01 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
Basically this. It's far too Christian for me, and also I found the aesthetic and the writing kind of trashy. And then there was some scandal about the canon creator screwing over their animators or their voice actors, I forget which.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-31 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems really edgelordy and annoying. I mostly just try to ignore it though.

It's using Christian mythology - as far as I know it's not imparting a Christian message. It's extremely possible to use Christian iconography and lore in an edgelordy way.

I thought this was the Tim Allen secret, so that was why I was confused.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-31 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-01 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Really? The entire thing seems to have a veneer of edgelord but otherwise be about how people are complicated but most are decent people just dealing with their problems in self-destructive ways. Most of the background characters are just coping with a shitty life however they can, be it drugs, sex or alcohol, while only a select few with power are awful (like Alastor and the Vees).

Because they saw Goodie Vivziepop with the devil.

I'm honestly confused by the hate. I was expecting it to be a lot more offensive and lower quality than it was. It does use crass and offensive humor but was on the lighter and kinder side of adult cartoons in general.

I find the show painfully average-but-fun but the main issues people have is the usualy modern fandom stuff. The creator has a track record of being insensitive on some things (namely race/culture) and said some transphobic things in private, the animators were treated badly during production, yadda yadda.

I kind of enjoyed it. But also, the pacing, narrative concepts, and plot-development and execution were wobbly and quarter-baked to a degree where it was kind of baffling that it somehow still sort of held together.

It felt like a 24-episode season that had been smashed up, and then instead of cutting out plotlines in order to make something that was eight episodes long and cohesive, the creator(s) kept all the plotlines and just jettisoned all of the connective tissue.

That's my answer as someone who doesn't hate it, but agrees with many of the opinions of people who do hate it.

Though I think many of the people who genuinely hate it, and don't just want to critique it for fun, are probably mostly people who watched the original Hazbin pilot back when it came out years ago and had been anticipating the show ever since, only to be resoundingly disappointed.

These are my gripes with it too. It wasn't nearly as bad as I expected, but it felt really rushed (even 13 episodes would be better than 8) and when revisiting the end I wondered what's the point of making going to Heaven the goal, when it's not any better than Hell... I'm hoping Season 2 will explain the latter issues, but if it's going to be the same length, I'm not holding my breath.

The colors in this are so pleasing. Perfect font color/style choice to accompany the picture.

Sorry, I have no comment on the actual secret as I haven't seen the show.

Thanks for making my secret, secret maker! Being genuinely excited for the show is legit my whole secret, because it's pretty unpopular with my fandom friends and I have just one other fandom friend who shares my enthusiasm. I liked it way more than I expected to after seeing so much negativity towards it. Glad I decided to watch and form my own opinion.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-31 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That sucks that your fandom friends don't share your enthusiasm. Being excited for new seasons or shows is a joy on it's own, but it just adds to the joy if you can gush with others.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-31 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I would love to share the hype, but at least I have one person to talk about theories and headcanons with. Plus I might always make some new fandom friends if I start branching out to the Hazbin fandom more :-)

Dude I LOVE Hazbin
I tweet about it a lot and I'm baking up a crossover AU

I’ve only seen 4/8 episodes so far, but I’m really enjoying it too! (And maybe have a crush on Vaggie, but I blame Stephanie Beatriz for that.) The friend who recommended it to me warned me ahead of time that it was graphic, but it turns out she’s squeamish about cannibalism whereas I was fully into Hannibal a decade ago, so I was pretty well prepared. 😅

I just want to know where it came from! I didn't hear any lead up to it, but people have been decidedly into or not into it since day 1. was there some previous content?

(Anonymous) 2024-06-01 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, apparently it's a whole-ass thing. Back in 2019 the "pilot" for it was uploaded onto youtube, and it blew up. It currently has 109M views. I'm not totally clear on the process that led the creator to making the pilot, but I'm pretty sure the gist is that she (Vivienne Medrano, a.k.a Vivziepop) was a small, independent creator who managed to rally enough interest and support for her concept that she was able to actually bring a 30-minute pilot into being as sort of a pitch/proof of concept.

It was popular and had quite a few fans, who were all very excited in a "The dream's really happening!" kind of way when it was announced that Hazbin Hotel was going to be a series.

And then several years later Hazbin Hotel the series was released on Amazon.

But between 2019 and 2024, the creator continued to feed fans of the pilot with a fairly constant stream of universe lore, character backstory, concept art, etc. It's all very inside baseball, and even the diehard fans who know the fandom wiki inside and out can't really know or agree on whether any of it is canon or not, since most of it is word of god but has yet to be established in the text itself, and may not even be current word of god anyway.

Also, in the interim between the Hazbin pilot being posted and the show being released, Vivziepop and her production company SpindleHorse released two seasons of a separate show with a separate cast of characters, called Helluva Boss, and it's apparently set in the same universe as Hazbin. So naturally there's quite a bit of cross-over in fanbase between fans of one and fans of the other.

It seems like Helluva Boss was released purely on Youtube, which explains why the whole endeavor remained pretty niche until Hazbin broke out into the mainstream with its release on Amazon Prime.

ooh, that actually is a lot of build-up, thank you for the rundown! and honestly that's pretty amazing for vivziepop to manage marketing that way.
