Why do people hate this show so much? I've not watched it but some of the songs are catchy.

I don't hate it, but I tried to give it a go and realized it was Christian based and bowed out. It does have catchy songs though!

Basically this. It's far too Christian for me, and also I found the aesthetic and the writing kind of trashy. And then there was some scandal about the canon creator screwing over their animators or their voice actors, I forget which.

It seems really edgelordy and annoying. I mostly just try to ignore it though.

It's using Christian mythology - as far as I know it's not imparting a Christian message. It's extremely possible to use Christian iconography and lore in an edgelordy way.

I thought this was the Tim Allen secret, so that was why I was confused.

Ah.

Really? The entire thing seems to have a veneer of edgelord but otherwise be about how people are complicated but most are decent people just dealing with their problems in self-destructive ways. Most of the background characters are just coping with a shitty life however they can, be it drugs, sex or alcohol, while only a select few with power are awful (like Alastor and the Vees).

Because they saw Goodie Vivziepop with the devil.

I'm honestly confused by the hate. I was expecting it to be a lot more offensive and lower quality than it was. It does use crass and offensive humor but was on the lighter and kinder side of adult cartoons in general.

I find the show painfully average-but-fun but the main issues people have is the usualy modern fandom stuff. The creator has a track record of being insensitive on some things (namely race/culture) and said some transphobic things in private, the animators were treated badly during production, yadda yadda.

I kind of enjoyed it. But also, the pacing, narrative concepts, and plot-development and execution were wobbly and quarter-baked to a degree where it was kind of baffling that it somehow still sort of held together.

It felt like a 24-episode season that had been smashed up, and then instead of cutting out plotlines in order to make something that was eight episodes long and cohesive, the creator(s) kept all the plotlines and just jettisoned all of the connective tissue.

That's my answer as someone who doesn't hate it, but agrees with many of the opinions of people who do hate it.

Though I think many of the people who genuinely hate it, and don't just want to critique it for fun, are probably mostly people who watched the original Hazbin pilot back when it came out years ago and had been anticipating the show ever since, only to be resoundingly disappointed.

These are my gripes with it too. It wasn't nearly as bad as I expected, but it felt really rushed (even 13 episodes would be better than 8) and when revisiting the end I wondered what's the point of making going to Heaven the goal, when it's not any better than Hell... I'm hoping Season 2 will explain the latter issues, but if it's going to be the same length, I'm not holding my breath.
