I once had a friend who gave gifts she wanted to get. Not gifts like, "Oh, I saw this and thought of you!" Legit things she personally wanted (because if she wanted it, everyone did?), regardless of who the giftee was.

I get this. I don’t rec shows I like very often because I know some of my friends won’t like the genre and I never assume that because I like something they will. I get wanting to gush with someone but I’ve got a friend I do that with even if she doesn’t care for the shows I’m watching, it’s really nice and we mutually will do this for one another. Sometimes she asks if she’d like a show I’m into and I either tell her she might but it’s X-genre or no because it’s a genre I know she won’t care for.

Thinking of other people is surprisingly a difficult thing for some people to do.

My personal un-favourite is with fic recs, when people just rec the most popular fics without bothering to actually read what was asked for, beyond the fandom.

Tbf I usually try to recommend things that I think my friends would like just (sometimes) to learn that they actually enjoy thing I didn't recommend because I thought it wasn't to their taste. Or I am telling them about a show after asking if they mind the spoilers and they get interested in seeing it.

I've been on both ends of this sort of conundrum.

I recc things to people and they either don't fuck with it or they tried it but it wasn't for them.
Or someone reccs me something and I don't like it or it doesn't interest me.

As I've gotten older, I've not only come to get a better idea of what to recc to who as well as reassuring people that if they don't check out/don't like what I recc I won't be sad or upset or feel any real way about it, but also I've come to accept that I'm not the best person at receiving reccs because it can sometimes feel like someone is telling me what to do or telling me they know me better than I know myself. And that is wholly personal to me. I can simply nod and thank someone for the recc. If I check it out and don't like it I will tell the person who recc'd it "it wasn't for me/I couldn't get into it."

How they react is about them, not about me.

It's become not that big of a deal for me.

Like, I love "It Follows" and when a friend asked me for my thoughts I told him I loved it but I don't think he would like it very much.
He didn't like it XD
Took no offense to it, actually had a good laugh with him about it.

I recc'd "The Bear" to everyone I know. One of my friends told me it was too intense and anxiety riddled, she only watched the first episode.
I was like, "yeah the show can get really intense. If you didn't vibe with it, it is what it is"

My main complaint with recommendations is when someone seems to be trying to get everyone they know into the same shows and games as them because they're insecure about liking things that aren't super popular.

Those are valid.

My biggest pet peeve is when people ask for specific things and someone replies with "I know this doesn't fit your ask, but" and then just recs their latest favorite. I don't mind if people rec things they love just because they are excited about it, but only in the context of open recs or general conversation. When you shoehorn it into everything is when it becomes a problem.

You’re right but I’m still glad it wasn’t his last. Losing him and Judi Dench at the same would have been too much for me and I think quite a lot of modern Bond fans.

I didn't even like Skyfall as much as most people did, but I still totally agree with you. It would've made so much sense (from a story-telling perspective) to end it there.

I mean, for the time it was pretty wacky that he dressed as a woman to evade detection. If not for the bombshell final 15 seconds I think that's what most people would latch on to.

And I heard that allegedly the confession was created in post or something, so *shrug*.

I got into true crime-y stuff in the early 2010s, mostly because I was so sucked into "Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills" and (at that point) the 2 docs that followed up on the case.

I feel like I was naive to assume most true crime stuff would be at the caliber of Berlinger and Sinofsky.

I really wanted to get into "The Jinx" based off people's intense discussions and recommendations, but couldn't get past the first 30-ish minutes of the first episode.
