I don't understand fandom lingo nowadays.

Whatever happened to "this was fucking awesome, I loved it!!!"? How in the world does anyone understand something like "screaming crying throwing up throwing my phone"?

Thank you nonnie!

True story, someone actually said this to me in real life after I made some statement (I don't even remember what). I was the oldest in the group of people I was talking to (mid 30s to their early 20s - not that noticeable usually) and they had to spend a good five minutes explaining to me what that meant. And I'm still not sure that it wasn't meant to be somewhat sarcastic as opposed to entirely positive.

Such a confusing term if you have nothing to work from on its meaning. My first thought was it had some relation to "basic", as in "basic bitch".

I'm also mid-thirties, and I thought "based" was our lingo. I've never used it myself, i don’t think, but I used to see it lot like a decade ago with people declaring people based for their actions or words. As in, someone will see a celebrity or a fictional character say something unexpectedly insightful or take a stand for something, and comment "based Mark Hamill" or whatever.

Turns out the usage has shifted, and I just never fully understood the original meaning, so easily went with the flow of the current use.

Despite being apparently ancient by 2024 fandom standards, I actually (mostly) love "screaming, crying, levitating, whatever" as an over the top reaction to something, but like a lot of things in fandom it can be waaaay overdone.

+100 basically

I'm mid-30's, and I honestly love most fandom lingo. Not ALL, but most. Including "screaming, crying, whatevering." Also, "I am UNWELL." Someone on GoodReads left a review (of the second book in an unfinished trilogy, that ended in a cliffhanger) that just said "Chewing on the bars of my enclosure," and I don't care how uninformative it is, I love it so much. Like, yeah bro, same.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-18 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. I do like fandom lingo, but it can be overdone so fast!

(Anonymous) 2024-06-17 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree with the sentiment, but holy fuck was this hard to read with so little contrast!

(Anonymous) 2024-06-17 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
New slang is fine and natural, and it's really easy to understand the process by which "screaming crying throwing up" becomes positive.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-18 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
You definitely have to pay attention though.

I miss using FEELS and ALL THE FEELS as expressions. Not even the fellow 2010 Tumblrinas use it any more :[

(Anonymous) 2024-06-17 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Feels bad, man

D':

(Anonymous) 2024-06-18 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
ALL THE FEELS is such a good one, too! My thing is that I still use all of the past slang and memes. If I still like it, I still use it. I don't care, I do what I want.

Why didn't you use stroke on the text, anon? You own me a visit to the ophthalmologist.

the first thing that popped into my head was definitely the Abe Simpson "with it" scene, so take comfort that it'll happen to us all.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-18 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get it and I hate it because sometimes a comment like "fuck you" means "This was so amazing it destroyed me emotionally, I love it" and sometimes it means "This sucks, I hate it." And most people in fandom can apparently tell when it means one or the other, but I don't think I ever will.

The text on this secret makes me think of that secret a while back where someone said if they're nervous about making a secret, they make the text hard to read. Lol.

But yeah, anyway, I am a cranky old woman yelling at cloud about this too. I once saw someone including "shitting my pants" in the list of physical reactions and that was a huge Do Not Want for me. In general, I just wish people would learn how to comment intelligently on stories and fiction and I feel like these style comments are being used to avoid having to articulate what about the story they liked and how they actually feel about it. Which is a good/important skill!

Like to be honest, I think what bothers me most about those comments isn't the negative-sounding reaction but just that it could literally be copypasted (and sometimes is copypasted) onto every fic the person reads without having to change anything. It's very generic and only gives me an indication they liked it to the point of inarticulateness (very similar to a keysmash). I appreciate the comment letting me know, but I just would prefer if someone would draw out/respond to at least one specific of the fic itself. (Beggars can't be choosers, though. I'd definitely prefer the screaming crying throwing up comment to no comment at all.)

I love fandom lingo. I want to be incomprehensible and cringe to the normies. Only thus can I be an unmarketable demographic.
