I mean, fair enough but this makes it seem like you're not having a good time in fandom/reading fics. So like...why bother?

(Anonymous) 2024-07-20 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you never gone looking for good stuff? When you do, do you instantly find it without having to look through lots of mediocre stuff to find it? Teach us your magic where every fic you read is 4/5 or better!

Seriously though, if you've never been bored enough to trawl through 2/5 fic looking for something good, idk what to tell you.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-20 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
This. It's not like the good stuff is immediately obvious from a three-sentence summary. In fact, a lot of the fics that I've ended up loving the most had totally bland/generic summaries.

idk what to tell you either, I lower my expectations because fic writers aren't professionals, they're just doing this for fun.

Edit: I also don't use the points system and instead of focusing on what I don't like about a fic, I focus on what I do like.

I lower my expectations too, and most fics are still mediocre. Sometimes there's nothing particular to like, even if there's nothing that stands out to dis-like and everything is inoffensive and extremely average. Extremely average doesn't mean good, though.

Anyway, when you find the good stuff, it's really good and fun. There are fics that are great, obviously. The process of finding them can and is often boring. "Why are you still 'watching movies' when the last 3 movies you watched weren't good???" is such an obviously silly question - you're 'watching movies' because you know there are good movies out there and you like good movies and want to find them. Pretty simple, and none of this melodramatic "if you read a fic you didn't enjoy, you like pain" stuff people keep implying.

. "Why are you still 'watching movies' when the last 3 movies you watched weren't good???"

I haven't watched a movie in a very long time, lol, and seeing this laid out like this poked my brain a little. I think part of it is the community aspect; movie producers and actors do not feel like my peers in the same way fandom people do. I want to encourage people to create, even if it's not really to my tastes, I want people to continue doing things. I don't know, it's probably a really old view of fandom that doesn't really work with how big and open fandom is now.

Replace movies with 'indie novels' and it'd be the same thing + community, but the point still holds.

I mean you can view it the most negative way possible, like "ha ha look at these silly people reading fic they think is bad ha ha they must like torturing themselves"... or look at it like "these people who like fanfic and are invested in finding and reading good fanfic are finding that they find most fanfic mediocre, but are still out here giving a whole lot of fanfics a fair chance to engage them and turn out to be good, because good fanfic is worth the trouble of looking for"

Nobody's out there seeking out 2/5 fanfic on purpose, and people are being polite by not commenting that they found the mediocre ones to be mediocre, and nobody's being harmed. However if someone wants all those people to leave comments about what they thought on every fanfic, it's probably not going to be positive for anyone.

Okay, that's extremely legit. I do agree that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all (unless a fic author actually requests concrit, which most do not, lol).

So, you know what this make me think of? A secret I made, like, over a decade ago (I can't believe I've been hanging around here that long. Granted, it's been off and on). I expressed basically the sentiment you're expressing here: I said that I wanted to encourage people to write, so I tried to find something I liked in every fic I read, and would leave a comment highlighting that, even if I disliked the fic overall.

FS fucking lit into me. I didn't get a single comment to that secret that wasn't something along the lines of, "fuck you, you've robbed me of all my confidence, now I'll never know whether the comments I receive on my fic are genuine." It completely changed the way I comment.

I almost want to say I remember this kerfuffle because I remember being so confused by the comments. XD How do you comment now?

(Anonymous) 2024-07-21 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

If overall I don't like something, then I just don't comment at all! I still make sure to comment on anything that I do like, and to highlight specific things that stood out to me. But I've completely stopped trying to encourage people who I think are weak writers, because it now feels like I'm lying to them.

Ooof, yeah. I can see how you would come to that conclusion. I guess it does save you time though!

(Anonymous) 2024-07-21 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Insecure fic writers be insecure and super serious, while also arguing that fanfic is Just For Fun.

You can't be like "we just do this for fun! Don't be mean!" then get mad when someone leaves you encouragement "to be nice." Wtf

Besides, those authors are in for a surprise when they realize the comments on their fic are already not genuine since fandom heavily discourages the leaving of honest comments if they're in any way negative or even neutral and "not positive enough!"

Then again, other people's insecurity isn't your problem, or mine, so...

(Anonymous) 2024-07-21 03:51 am (UTC)(link)

Interesting stance to take when the secret that started this discussion amounts to "the vast majority of fanfic I finish is 2/5 at best".

(Anonymous) 2024-07-21 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Where on the secret does it say that?

(Anonymous) 2024-07-24 04:35 am (UTC)(link)

The things OP wants to say about it, which would be very silly to say about something you backed out of one sentence in.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-20 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Most fic I click on is DNF. Still fun to sort through it.

[personal profile] nanslice 2024-07-21 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
That's legit! I do a quick skim of the first few paragraphs of a fic to see how it works with my interpretation of the characters and I will absolutely back button if I don't like what I'm seeing. I just don't really consider that reading. XD

Personally, I bother because someone else said it’s a good fic and I should read it. If I didn’t like it, I don’t contradict them.
