this is all of my worst fears with getting 0 comments on fics. love that you're just out here murdering all of us mediocre writers in one fell swoop lololol (though to be fair i never beg people to leave comments, sooo)

(Anonymous) 2024-07-20 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
What about zero comments, but four hundred Goodreads reviews?

some nonny here asked me to post links to a fic I wrote so I did and they must not have liked it because I got NO reaction at all.

This is what bugs me about the "please commment" requests and arguments that writers need comments as part of the fandom economy. The people making these requests and arguments don't want "comments" or "feedback," they want praise and compliments and positive reinforcement. Which is fine, everyone wants those things. But call it like it is.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-21 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
100% this.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-21 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
We need to bring back the word "egoboo".

(Anonymous) 2024-07-21 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ok so what if they do want praise? Why do you act like they kicked down your door and put a gun to your head?
Its an easy to ignore request - if you feel that against it, don't comment and pretend to have a life to move on with.

I mean, fair enough but this makes it seem like you're not having a good time in fandom/reading fics. So like...why bother?

(Anonymous) 2024-07-20 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you never gone looking for good stuff? When you do, do you instantly find it without having to look through lots of mediocre stuff to find it? Teach us your magic where every fic you read is 4/5 or better!

Seriously though, if you've never been bored enough to trawl through 2/5 fic looking for something good, idk what to tell you.

Personally, I bother because someone else said it’s a good fic and I should read it. If I didn’t like it, I don’t contradict them.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-20 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I’ve definitely read fics that would warrant those comments. But I’m picky so for most of my fandoms and ships I read work that’s so amazing that I can’t put my overwhelming feelings into words.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-20 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Just mention the things you like. Instead of meh could have been better - I enjoyed the fic. Boring plot - nice ambience and IC. Not one of my faves - again, I enjoyed the fic. Because you're into pain if you read and not enjoyed a fic. Tropey and predictable? OP, I stopped taking this secret seriously after reading this. OF COURSE it is tropey, it's fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-20 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
What's with people thinking every fic has to be "enjoyable" or "hated it," and if you didn't hate it, you must have enjoyed it, stop lying to yourself?

A lot of fics can be not good without being bad, and you can read through something even if you wouldn't describe it as enjoyable. I read through some fics hoping they will get better but then it doesn't. Or thinking maybe an interesting ending will redeem a bland plot but then it doesn't.

Like the whole point of a 5 star system is that 2, 3, and 4 can exist where you don't hate or love something. I wouldn't call something 2/5 enjoyable, but I wouldn't be all shocked and confused if someone started watched something worth a 2* rating then watched through to the end, one time, to see if it got better. And if it didn't, that doesn't mean they suddenly secretly enjoyed it the whole time just because they gave it a fair chance.

reviews are not the same as comments.

from the recent goodreads secrets I get that there's something weird going on in the culture of review-fandom, but us old schoolies who've lived with fic comments that are NOT reviews for the last 25 years of the internet, whatever's going on here has nothing to do with leaving a comment (or not) on a fic. I like comments even if it's just "loved it write more!" but I can live without them. Reviews like /points at secret would fall under "crit" and also fic writers have said whether they want crit for those same 25 years.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-20 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Are comments defined as positive-only messages? I haven't seen that necessarily being the case and I've been in fandom like 20 years. "I welcome all comments, positive or negative" implying that comments can also be negative, has been a thing for ages.

If people mean positive-only messages, why not specify "please leave praise"? If there's nothing wrong with that, why not be straightforward about it?

(Anonymous) 2024-07-21 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I do wonder if its the culture of readers coming over from Watpad. I've heard that this sort comment is more common on there.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-21 03:59 am (UTC)(link)

Whoever built FFN 25 years ago decided "the basic unit of response shall be called a review, and it shall be built accordingly", and the rest of fandom immediately went "lol. lmao even".

i mean i agree that authors wanting comments are primarily wanting praise or at least validation/acknowledgement, and i agree with you that conflating that with people's feeling about the fic is a bad idea, because author would definitely get more feelings, but i'd doubt they'd get necessarily get good ones.

but this sounds like you're being pedantic about it. most of these authors are clearly asking the people who like it to comment, because there are plenty of people who *do* like and *don't* comment. do yourself the favor and create the polite fiction that the people who are saying "please comment" more vaguely than "if you like, please comment" are still doing the latter if even they aren't.

All I would get as a writer from those "reviews/comments" is the reader didn't vibe with what I wrote. No example in the secret would tell me what didn't connect or what did. Was my characterization off, or was my pacing too fast or slow? In other words, that's not what writers mean when they say they want feedback, constructive or otherwise.

But I think you knew that, didn't you?
