RDJ back in the MCU

(Anonymous) 2024-07-28 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
He's playing Dr Doom, allegedly. So, I guess he's back in a mask, just not the mask. And I don't know how I feel about this.

Personally I think it is cool. I wonder whether he's going to be playing a version of Stark who becomes Dr. Doom or Victor Von Doom who just happens to look like the Tony Stark of the main MCU universe. Either way, I like the idea of him playing a villain. And Dr. Doom is one of my favorite Marvel villains.

Well now I don't like the idea at all.

somewhere in the distance, the sound of the tiniest violin.

Ah, so now that he has his Oscar, he's back to making money.

His past independent projects have not made that much, maybe he wants to be in a hit movie again.

Oppenheimer was not a hit movie?

I was hugely into the MCU prior to covid. I didn't mind keeping up with a bunch of movies and even a couple of shows but now it's just out of balance and I can't get excited about anything. Not even this news. I'm glad for RDJ though, and I hope whoever's still into the MCU gets to enjoy themselves.

I don't like it but I'm just one person, although I know I'm not alone. But it will definitely make money having him back in the films and I think Marvel knows that. DP&W making all the money it has just proved that riffing on nostalgia (and that's no shade, even though I'm unclear if I think it was ACTUALLY a good film, I thought that DP&W was a nice love letter to the Fox X-Men films if nothing else) and having the same beloved actor playing different versions of a character(s) gets bums on seats.

I saw the headlines today but I somehow did not think this was a big deal at all until I saw the reaction in fannish places. Apparently a lot of people have big feelings on this topic.

Same. I’ve seen meltdowns of ecstasy and meltdowns of outrage. I had no idea anyone still cared that much about the MCU.

So, if Doom's RDJ's age, then I guess we're skipping straight to the "Reed and Sue have teenaged kids" era?

Pedro Pascal is Mister Fantastic and Vanessa Kirby is Sue, so take from that what you will. It is apparently going to be a period piece, set in the fifties or sixties.

Odd choices all around, but maybe it'll work.

I know how I feel about it. I hate it. It's like... will we be stuck in this loop until we die? Why are we going back to actors who have moved on? Also he is deeply Not Doom and I want him no where near that green cape. What a wild disappointment. I hope this is some weird fake stunt for publicity.

There is MCU precedent. Chris Evans played Johnny Storm again in Deadpool and Wolverine. So actors shifting up roles, and even returning to old ones after playing new ones is well within the purview of the MCU.

I'm cool with it. Disney is not doing all that well as a company, especially the movie side of things. I think it's a good decision from a financial standpoint because if anything will get butts in theater seats, he will.

The MCU alone has made over $30 billion as a franchise for Disney. I think they are going to be fine.

I just don't want MCU anymore. I just don't want it. It's too much, I feel like I've swallowed a pound of sugar, my doctor said I'm pre-diabetic, I've got to do something else now. I wish we could all do something else now!

Who is forcing you to go to these movies, tell us and we'll stop them. You don't need to go watch them at all, you can just go to literally any other movie you want.

I wonder if this isn't some weird combination of studio timidity and ascended fanboyism? RDJ talked about his love of comics back when the first Iron Man was released, and it's quite possible that the studio didn't have to try too hard to lure him back into another role he'd be interested in.

For another example of such, BBC/Disney getting David Tennant to come back as the bait-and-switch 14th Doctor comes to mind.

Iirc, he's been on record saying he loves being part of the mcu, but wanted(/needed?) to quit being iron man because, despite loving and tbh making the character, the role itself was getting to be too physically taxing for him. Imo, he deserves to be able to be as involved as they want to allow him to be, since he basically singlehandedly launched the whole franchise. (Ymmv on if that was a good thing, ofc.)

Re: RDJ back in the MCU

I'm kind of excited about it, but it's pretty bittersweet. I just want Tony Stark back. Or even if he wasn't going to be in any more MCU movies, I just want him to not be dead.

Getting RDJ back isn't getting Tony Stark back, but a little piece of my brain is like, "We'll take the scraps, we'll take them, we'll take anything."

I also don't know whether to hope he stays masked the whole time, which is less interesting but also less emotionally painful, or whether to hope they play it as him being a multiverse version of Tony Stark who is Dr. Doom. I've never been a SIM ho, personally, so a Dr. Doom Tony doesn't really appeal to me (and in some ways will just make me sadder, watching the characters be confronted with a version of Tony Stark who is so profoundly not their Tony.

A reminder that this a part of Hollywood eating its own tail and wondering why the industry is dying.

There are no movie stars because studios are more interested in creating and keeping a franchise of characters. And even the franchises are dying because studios need to rehash characters and actors. When something new comes along it's still the same shit, just dressed up a little differently.

Who needs anything new when they can just continually recycle everything?

Disney has made over thirty billion dollars from the MCU alone. If that is dying, I could do with a bit of that myself.
