Eh, I agree. I think in the cases of Haruhi I can see her being on board with identifying as NB if she knew about it (or just wouldn't care what others see her as), but I notice even the most mildly GNC female characters get called a trasmasc egg, NB, etc. Sure, you can see them that way, but sometimes it's treated as the only way to accept nonconforming women is to say they're not women. It sucks as someone who is GNC and "tried out" being NB and it didn't work out for me. The word "terf" is so meaningless because I have trans friends get called that for finding it sexist.

What I just don't like about a lot of this discussion is how a lot of fans of the NB headcanons insist on them being textual when in reality - especially in the case of non-English media - they wilfully misinterpret vague translations of what an author has allegedly said about a character when in most cases, it's not anywhere near as clear-cut as they pretend.

It's very interesting as well that in both cases people in this thread are saying that "the creator" confirmed these characters to be nonbinary, but near as I can tell this isn't true. At least for Haruka, as that is a fandom I follow quite closely: it's not the creator, nor is it the Haruka who says this, but a different character entirely (albeit one who is very close to Haruka). And the line being referred to can be translated in a number of ways: at its most literal, Haruka is confirmed to be intersex; less literally, it just means that Haruka is both masculine and feminine (i.e., it says Haruka has "the strengths/qualities of" both genders), not that Haruka is both a man and a woman.

What Takeuchi (the creator) has said is that "only women can be Sailor (Guardians)". Since Haruka is a Guardian, Haruka is confirmed to be a woman, or at least to identify as such to some extent (not to disclude the possibility that she/he is bigender).

I don't follow Ouran as much, but I do remember the line that Haruhi doesn't care/think much about gender. To call this "confirmation" that Haruhi is nonbinary is a huge stretch; many cis people don't care or think much about gender. Nor have I ever seen any confirmation from the creator - this appears to be something people made up on the internet.

That said! I have no issues with either character being thought of/headcanoned as nonbinary. (As I said in a comment above, I actually think Haruka as bigender is a fair and accurate reading of manga!Haruka, while it's pretty clear that 90s anime!Haruka was intended to be a butch lesbian.) And that's cool! But the whole "it's word of god"/"has been confirmed" thing appears to be a straight up lie. There's no source for it whatsoever.
