Joke is on the old TERF : Haruka/Sailor Uranus has been essentially outright called bigender/non-binary in canon. In canon she is outright described as being both a man and a woman.

Oof. I mean I agree that I get annoyed at any variation from what is considered "100% female" gets labeled as non-female, but you worded this secret in the most TERF-y wankbaity way.

Anything gets labeled as anything if you ask the right person. Most people consider female characters female. Most people also consider real AFAB people who have told them explicitly that they aren't female, female. I'll be annoyed about NB headcanons when I can go out in public dressed as androgynously as possible with a mask covering most of my face and not confidently get called "ma'am" by every cashier ever.

Uh, what?

If your knowledge of other gender identities is limited to "nonbinary" and "agender" then I suggested you get educated by another source that isn't Tumblr, because Tumblr didn't create all those identities.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, I thought Tumblr was where most people think the nonbinary identities that aren't just "nonbinary" (umbrella term, or a third gender) or "agender" come from.

Naoko Takeuchi described Haruka as both male and female. That is literally the definition of nonbinary.

Haruhi says she doesn't care what gender people see her as. That is literally canonically falling within the definition of nonbinary.

Nobody has to identify as anything they don't want to, and these characters being fictional and written in a time before most people knew what nonbinary meant (not because it didn't exist) makes it harder to say what they are -- they can't canonically identify as anything they weren't written as canonically saying they are. We don't know if these characters would say "I'm nonbinary" if they had the language for it, because they aren't real. But they also do, canonically, fall into categories that would make them able to correctly identify that way if they had the language.

*"literally falling within the definition of nonbinary" I should have said up there about Haruka as well

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, the Haruhi thing is a stretch. You can be a cis man who doesn't care if people call him she/her and think he's a woman, or a cis woman who doesn't care if people call her he/him or think she's a man, because who cares if people get it wrong?

I'm not OP and don't care what headcanons people want to have, more power to 'em, just saying "don't really care" could easily be cis and applies to many cis people.

I mean the original source material for Sailor Moon explicitly states that Haruka isn't 100% a man or 100% a woman, so you're wrong, and also you're being a bigot, but you knew that going into making this secret.

As others have said the canon of Sailor Moon(and the creator) doesn't consider Haruka to me a man or woman, so this negates the attempted point you're even trying to make.

But I sincerely doubt you've made this to be anything other than confrontational so both you and your secret can go ~out the window.

Can't tell if this is a troll or if being a terf just makes you THAT stupid, but in both cases the creators of those characters have described them as nonbinary, a thing that has existed as long as there have been humans. I mean, I certainly remember reading about a VARIETY of nonbinary genders before the invention of tumblr, but then, not being a terf, I've read more than seven children's books in my life.

Wrong characters for the secret, but I get your point. It just feels that the same people who are quick to slap a non-cis gender-label on a character or themselves are incredibly absolute and binary on what makes someone a woman or a man. Short hair? Likes to dress in plain t-shirts and jeans? Can't be a cis woman. Log hair? Colorful clothes and likes nailpolish? Can't be a cis man. Etc etc.

Eh, I agree. I think in the cases of Haruhi I can see her being on board with identifying as NB if she knew about it (or just wouldn't care what others see her as), but I notice even the most mildly GNC female characters get called a trasmasc egg, NB, etc. Sure, you can see them that way, but sometimes it's treated as the only way to accept nonconforming women is to say they're not women. It sucks as someone who is GNC and "tried out" being NB and it didn't work out for me. The word "terf" is so meaningless because I have trans friends get called that for finding it sexist.
