Exercise/Strength Training?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-02 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Kind of random for here but I thought some of you might have some good routines or know of some to share. Right now I basically do treadmill/walks/hikes and riding a bicycle for exercise and I've lost 25lbs and would now like to take it up a notch. Specifically, I'd like to add some morning strength training sessions. Does anyone have any youtube or free online recommendations? I am very weak with poor core stretch, so something verrrry beginner friendly so I won't get discouraged.

I'd also like to get into flexibility and stretching more, if you have recs for those.

I don't have a link handy but the search term you want is "bodyweight" exercises - you can customize your workout based on your flexibility, current strength, etc. For example, I can only do squats when my knee isn't hurting, so I can add or subtract a few reps depending on the day. You don't need equipment, just yourself.

Be careful searching youtube, though. My physical therapist sent me a link to show me a technique and the next thing I knew my feed was all pseudoscience fake therapists promising their one foolproof trick to X/Y/Z. And legit PTs also pushing clickbait solutions, at the same time, it's hard to filter which ones are legit. Thankfully, websites with step-by-step photos exist.

Oh thank you! I am new to the whole exercise and healthy lifestyle thing, so thank you for the terms to help me search. I just kind of started moving more and eating less, but now I feel ready to do some more formal stuff. Also ty for the warning!

Ty again for this! The term helped me find a few sites that recommended just starting super basic and helped me get my mind out of the old school "exercise program" mindset. I started this morning with 3 sets of each: squats, push ups (wall), mountain climbers, and glute bridge!

I really like TRX for core strength, I started doing it to help with a shoulder injury and now it's part of my gym routine. Start slow because as the other anon said it's easy to push past your limits too fast when it comes to bodyweight exercises. I've heard a lot of good things about TRX for weight loss and strength building, my main focus at the moment is strengthening the areas I was dealing with the injury and it's been great for that. I haven't noticed a big difference with weight, I'm changing my meds right now so my weight has been going up and down and I don't know what's causing what, lol. To warmup for TRX I use exercise bands, that could be a good choice if you don't have access to TRX or it's too much for you right now. Exercise band stretches fits with your goal of getting more flexible and more strong too. You can find a lot of great info online for different exercise band stretches, but I find I end up enjoying to modify them a bit and make my own routines to fit where I am at the time, cause they're so open ended.

Crabwalk laps with exercise band around my ankles + doing clamshells + bridge stretch did a lot to help with my hip and thigh strength and lower core strength. I like doing stretches between sets of bodyweight exercises so I can keep my stamina for longer.

Sorry if this is incoherent, I have a fever lol. Also sorry not to have a link or anything! Good luck nonny.

TRX looks a bit beyond me at the moment, but I will look more into exercise bands. I am new to all of this!

I hope your fever goes away and you feel better!

At first I was like how dare you, I'm not a senior yet XD but you know, looking up exercise for seniors in general is a great idea for finding more gentle workouts to start with. And that channel has a bunch! Thank you.

I'm a fan of BodyFit by Amy. She's one of the few workout channels I like:
https://youtube.com/@bodyfitbyamy?si=FK7hRyoRLTjGp6AZ

She has tons of workouts for all types, with and without equipment, and in all workouts she gives easier options as well.

How long do you want the workouts to be? Her regular workouts are around 30 minutes, but she has a lot of quick 10 minute workouts as well, especially in her older stuff.

I was thinking 30mins sounds doable. My attention span is shit and I find exercising so boring, but I figure I could pull it together for 30 minutes lol

da

I sometimes read on my phone when I do a treadmill walk, and listen to music, which stretches my workout longer when I'm getting distracted. Walking is great for weight loss and stretching (if you do an incline). You could do audiobook and once I've seen someone reading a paper book!

ayrt yes! I have been listening to podcasts or listening to music on my walks, and I got a stationary bike so I watch an episode on youtube while riding that. It has been great! I just feel I've reached the point to add more alongside the walking.
