San Fransisco vs NYC

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2024-09-08 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
My sister and I are trying to decide on where to go for a 4 day (maybe 5 day) trip to either NYC or San Fran. We want to be able to use public transportation the whole time. We enjoy visiting museums (she likes are ones). We also want to try a Michelin star restaurant. This will be in the first or third week of October.

I've never been to CA, we have both visited NYC but that was just for a day to see The Lion King.

Which would you choose? Why?

I think both are great. New York City has much better museums - San Francisco has decent museums but New York is one of the best museum cities on the planet, especially for art museums. Both have stellar food, and I think it's a wash in that regard. SF usually has slightly nicer weather in October if that makes a difference.

IDK I think it's a good choice either way really.

Yeah, my sister is leaning towards NYC because she LOVES art museums.

I have only been to San Francisco and it was in October (many years ago) and it was so lovely. We stayed right by Chinatown and the food was incredible. The hills are insane tho so if you have any mobility issues be forewarned. There are better art museums in New York, obviously, but there are lots of niche museums in SF that are neat (Alcatraz was my favorite). The public transportation was easy to get on to and around on. It was a great city and I'd love to go back. The Haight-Ashbury district felt so special to babyqueer me.

My sister does have mobility issues. Did the public transit seem adequate to help with that? She just has hip issues if she walks to long.

I mean I use a cane and the hills were just murder going up OR down but the buses and trollies ran at all hours and got us to majority of the places we wanted to go?

Okay, that's good!

(Anonymous who recommended the Exploratorium)

The cable cars and Muni should help with that (it's being in a wheelchair that can be trouble, as a late friend of mine lamented).

I’ve only been to NYC so I’d chose SF just to see somewhere new. NYC is great but any time I go, I feel like I need to draw up an itinerary for each day or I’ll waste tons of time. I could be wrong but SF seems like the kinda city where you can be more laid back on a trip and leave some things to chance.

TBF, I love itineraries.

SF hands down. But I am a weirdo that thinks NYC is an ugly over rated city lol so my opinion might not be worth much.

Yeah, I didn't like the one day I spent in NYC but their museums are great.

I've only been to SF myself, but I can tell you that the Exploratorium is a very fun hands-on science museum. Sure, it's aimed at kids but really anyone can have fun there. The Musee Mechanique is also a banger.

Can't recommend a restaurant, at least not a Michelin one.

Dang, that might make San Fran good for my niblings.

San Francisco area is lovely in fall but I'm not sure it's as easy to get around using only public transportation as it is in NYC. There are also some gorgeous natural beauty spots to visit outside of SF that requires a car, so if that interests you, it might be better to wait for a longer trip/trip where you can rent a car. I'd recommend driving out to Monterey to see the awesome aquarium and the gorgeous coastal highway scenery, or heading north to Muir Woods to see redwood forest. Maybe Point Reyes for whale-watching and gorgeous coastline.

NYC has better museums, and everything is more centralized. Both places will have great food.

LATE!

But, I'm from NYC, never been to SF, so I'd recommend SF if only because it's brand new to you! However, you can get around the whole city with a car (although not every train stop is accessible, the buses are -- major train stations usually are). There's always a bunch of events happening here, so if you do decide NYC, let us know, and I'd be happy to share some upcoming events (and there are so many that are free!) . I also recommend avoiding Times Square. And try getting out to the other boroughs -- there's cool stuff happening there too!

Thanks! We've still not landed on which one. Depends on hotel prices as this point. But for both, we will be going near the end of October. Hoping to catch some Halloween themed stuff if we do that.
