Speaking of DS9, (and I say this as someone who has only seen the show once, as it was airing), I always hated what they did with Sisko. Instead of being the most competent person who just happened to be the proper person at the proper time doing their best, it was all mystical destiny and breeding and I was not a fan.

right? like, season 1 wrote a check they wouldn't be able to cash by the end, but there had to have been a hundred better ideas for exactly why the prophet-aliens considered him a chosen one and kept saving his sorry ass. I say that as a huge Sisko fan, btw, I just basically stop every rewatch when Jadzia leaves and disavow the rest of the series after that. there had to have been a better explanation for his emissary status, so many good ideas left on the writing room floor.

I could have dealt with the magical destiny stuff okay (since the aliens in question don't experience time as we do) but the mind-control rape part of the backstory that the show didn't seem to realise was rape was just not okay.

Rey's as it stands because I prefer the TLJ version. It was something new for Star Wars and that was a good thing. It isn't specifically her being related to Palpatine that I object to just that she's related to anyone at all.

In Supernatural where previously John knew nothing about hunting and wasn't from a background where he was born into it until Mary was killed and then they invented the Men of Letters and suddenly John had a hunting background too.

Art curators

Curators are useless IMO, useless to artists and useless to audiences. They all seem to be hideously posh and some definitely inbred. And they’ve forced themselves into powerful postions at galleries and overstated their importance in order to control what we see and what we don’t, what’s deemed good and worthy and what int etc. It’s one of the ways the toffs have maintained control over art.

No, that's stupid. Curation is an important and extremely useful functionality, because it's actually hard if not impossible to just immerse yourself in the firehose of human cultural output. The fact that some curators are bad or incompetent does not take away the importance of curation.

What art museums are you going to? I feel like this attitude is myopic and ignores efforts by even large museums to curate works from diverse populations.

Hell, I went to a talk at the Walker where the majority of the featured artists were women/nonbibary. All of them also had wildly different styles and focus subjects. I'd say the Walker's curators are making a decent effort at not having the toffs dominating the art discussion.

So if you've been following American politics, you know that J.D. Vance (an absolute toerag of a human being) has really fanned the flames of racism by claiming that Haitian immigrants are stealing and eating peoples' pets in Springfield, OH. There is no such evidence of this, but as a result of his lies (that he just admitted were lies, made up for attention), multiple bomb threats have been called on various locations in Springfield, and the Haitian population is facing a lot of hate and threats of violence. I work as an RN in Springfield. many of my patients are Haitians who have recently arrived. They've been through so much and there is so much hatred towards them. Really wish people understood that cheeky neoliberal jokes about the "eating pets conspiracy" that attempt to be at Trump's expense do not help us in this issue. The racism towards our Haitian community members has been consistent and building for a long time, and now it's on a national stage and it's scary and hurtful and embarrassing. And now the "Haitians eating animals on Springfield" thing feels like it's permanently part of the joking about this election, and it's part of making them less safe. Our safety is all intertwined.

And honestly? FUCK YOU AND YOUR WHITE LIBERAL GUILT. I swear to god, idiots on the left do this all the damn time, get all soft and teary-eyed because they're well meaning but gullible, and then they come up with stuff like, "mAkInG fUn oF ThE rAcIsTs MaKeS uS jUsT aS bAd As ThE rAcIsTs!!!"

That's similar to what I was thinking. I don't mind jokes at Trump's expense but someone else shouldn't be getting hurt as a result. There's a time and place for everything. Obviously I'm not saying to give in to the bullies, but maybe think of better ways to combat the bullies if the jokes are doing more harm to an innocent party than good.

I think to respond to racist claims by turning them into jokes is immature and turns the issue into "my privilege VS your privilege".
And in what ways is this helping the Haitian community?

They're being targeted and threatened, and the only response you feel is needed (or is the issue with utmost concern) is to quip a joke about Republicans that is still about dehumanizing a minority class?

Maybe focus less on others' white guilt and focus on your own entitlement.

The energy I get from this vent would probably do better to help the Haitan community - who are in need of support and protection.
