Mostly same. Audiences are getting more inconsiderate and honestly, most movies are out on BR/DVD/whatever within the same year, and I can wait to see them. For the price of two people to see the movie, I can own a permanent copy.

Gods do I feel you on the time commitment thing. I will end up sitting down for two hours of episodes, but trying to get me to commit ahead of time to a movie of the same length is a losing battle. And then a movie theater is even longer with all the trailers etc.

I do enjoy seeing a few specific movies in the theater (I've seen all the newer Star Wars and Deadpools, for example) but for the most part I am meh on the theater. Expensive, people coughing and chomping, the theater seats hurt my hips and back, and the time commitment. Old and crochety club for us!

D-wonton is amazing and made me laugh

I'm glad my brain acting like an autocorrect is amusing to people besides myself!

The Theater

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
What movies, if any, do you think are worth it to see on the big screen?

I was happy I saw the D&D movie in the theater, but that's the only recent one I can think of. I wish I had seen Jurassic Park in the theater back in the day.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I can't blame age either. I was apparently born old and crochety (and cheap) because I've never been all that excited about theater experience or 'amazing' action scenes.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
For what it's worth, I miss movie theaters being more fun. I really dislike feeling like the theater is damaging my hearing with the soundtrack volume, and how bad most actors seem to have gotten about enunciating. I legit have a better experience at home, where I can mute the giant explosions and scenes that are basically just people screaming, and add subtitles any time I want.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, both of these things sound obnoxious.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, like this makes sense when they're remembering recipes for themselves, but not when they're supposedly teaching other people who don't know where to even start to adjust from.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Big same. I've been coming to FS since way back in the non-numbered wild comments day sin LJ. I'll take a break now and then, but it always makes me so happy when I decide to check back in and I see it alive and kicking. I don't have many fandom community anymore, so this place is filling that void for now.

I wish there was some award we could give Case for keeping this place going. It's got to be the longest continuous community I've ever been a part of, and I am thankful and impressed.

I kind of wish I had not deleted my accounts so I could come back as my old names, but at this point I don't even remember them.

Fear and/or Frustrations

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I really want to get back into writing, but I haven't written anything beyond journal entries in over 10 years (which feels shameful to admit for some reason) and I have some new weird kind of writer's block that is fully fear based. Like I have ideas I formulate in my head and I'll get as far as hand writing outlines or ideas but I never quite make it to actual writing. I am determined to work through it, but it is incredibly frustrating at the moment.

Feel free to offer advice. commiserate, or add your own current fears and/or frustrations to this thread.

Yes, absolutely! For me, it’s especially an issue when I’m cooking for other people. If you tell me to “measure with my heart” when it comes to heat or acid or garlic, I usually know what that means for my palate. But for others? I’m afraid of seriously under- or over-compensating.

Please give me a “standard” amount that’s been tested by a sample of people!

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be wildly annoying! I've only seen the "measure with your heart" thing as a joke after the measurement, and usually it is things like chocolate chips - a fun addition that honestly doesn't matter. There is never going to be a natural "measure with your heart" for me, I like cooking because I have exact recipes to follow!

Seeing Master and Commander on the big screen was really something. It made the ocean feel overwhelming and terrifying in a way that I think wouldn’t have happened on a smaller format.

I missed seeing Monkey Man in theatres and I regret it. I’m still hoping to watch it on my friend’s projection set-up .

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Theatres are so expensive these days, it's a rare movie that's worth watching on the big screen, regardless of if it would be better on it or not.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Same! I still read it that way at first and then have to correct myself.

As a writer, I tend to think reveals are overrated. They have their uses, but a lot of my writing is like the incident report in this comic: https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/2553:_Incident_Report The fun is in seeing how the dominoes fall.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This is really beautiful to me. I’m sorry you regret the secret so much, I’m sure it didn’t bother anyone that much. And I’m so glad you found solace in the music.

Gravity in 3D was amazing. I also really enjoyed Fury Road in the theatre.

We just missed Monkey Man because we saw no advertising for it until I saw some gifsets on tumblr and that very day was the last day in the theatre.

Spoiler culture sucks. It's ruining entertainment.

EXACTLY.

I do a lot of experimental cooking by finding a recipe online based on some ingredient I want to use (or use up, why is a head of cabbage too much), so I know the ins and outs of trying it as written first, then assessing what worked or didn't and adjusting for the next attempt. I would never do that if I were trying to teach someone to cook! My roommate doesn't cook but we keep talking about me teaching her my favorite recipes (jambalaya, enchiladas verdes, kung pao), and I already know that if I did I'd give her written measurements down to the quarter-teaspoon, especially with spices that can make or break the heat level of the finished dish. And to-the-minute timer, too, because it's taken me too long to figure out exactly how long my roux needs to simmer, I ain't making someone else guess that!

Oof, I feel this so hard, nonny. That was me until maybe just two months ago, even down to the journal entries. I had all the ideas and outlines, but I’d just get paralyzed by fear for stupid reasons and not do any actual writing. I ended up doing Tim Clare’s 100 day writing challenge and that helped me get started. I’m not gonna lie, I didn’t even get to ten days, but just getting stuff down on paper was really helpful. I stopped doing the challenge because I wanted to work on my own thing instead of the exercises and I’ve been writing almost every day.

I’ve also found it very helpful to leave my phone in another room while I write because my phone’s way too distracting. I also write using full screen mode on my computer. Also, and this is kinda silly, but I keep reminding myself that it’s okay for my writing to suck and it should suck in the early stages.

OP

Ha! It appears I am in good company.

Honestly I had no idea this was a common mistake. I do feel a bit better about it now.

Hm, I thought V for Vendetta was worth the ticket price in an actual theater.

Disney messed with some of the timing in The Lion King to shorten the playing time for VHS tape, and in comparison, I miss the long and threatening pause they took out right after Scar says, "you wouldn't kill your own uncle!"

I really would have liked to see Oliver Stone's Snowden in theaters. I loved the acting and the pacing and the clarity of the narrative. Wasn't possible.
