Eh. I like cockroaches more than small children. Some of both can be cute, but I'd rather deal with the roaches.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-19 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
That's nuts. I don't have kids, don't want kids, but saying roaches are better is super crazy dysfunctional.

I don't get how you're reading "I'd rather deal with roaches than kids" as "roaches are inherently superior beings to children".

If I say I'd rather deal with dogs than children, this isn't saying dogs are better than children. I would personally rather deal with the former than the latter.

I don't have kids and don't want kids of any sort, but some species of roaches make very harmless and cute pets. You don't seem to know much about roaches.

I interpreted ayrt's comment as "roaches are better (to deal with)" and not "roaches are superior" but that's just me.

Personally I fucking hate roaches but if people want to keep them as pets, they can knock themselves out.

I'd rather sit in a room with 10 roaches in it than a room with 10 kids in it for an hour. This is a personal preference that really isn't "super crazy dysfunctional" to me.

But apparently saying that makes people mad? Idk man.

I don't want kids either but yeah, I enjoy my wee nieces and nephews at their most epic annoying meltdowns way more than the one time I was over at a friend's flat in London for a week and we unfortunately discovered a roach infestation. They were under the bath, we could hear them skittering around at night. Grim. Would not recommend.

Assuming we have to deal with them for the same amount of time, I'd still rather the roach infestation than the children.

If we're comparing 10 minutes of meltdown which you can walk away from, vs someone else's roach infestation that you can also walk away from, still roaches.

If we're comparing 10 minutes of meltdown to a months-long infestation, that doesn't seem fair?

Fair enough anon, I actually think it's fine that not everyone wants to deal with children directly. Even as someone who can deal with kids but only if it's not all day every day but would take looking after my sister's kids for a month over never having to have a cockroach run over my bare feet while I'm brushing my teeth ever again!

(Anonymous) 2024-09-19 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I can respect that, people like/dislike different things better.

Just wanted to say it's not "super crazy dysfunctional" to pick the roaches, depending on what's being compared. People automatically assume "deal with someone else's children for a short time" vs. "having a long term roach infestation in your home" when it should really be a comparison of the two over the same time period e.g. "sit in a room with roaches for 10 minutes vs sit in a room with children for 10 minutes"

(Anonymous) 2024-09-19 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd rather deal with the kids. A kid can't crawl inside your ear and snack on your eardrum while you sleep. You don't need an infestation for that.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-19 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean if that's the danger, you can just kill the roach and get rid of it.

You can't really get rid of a child like that, not that anyone should want to, but if you hate roaches you have more options to make them go away.

You'll take the pain of a bug literally eating your insides, and a hospital visit to remove it, over ten minutes being in the presence of kids.

Well, okay then. Have fun.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-20 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Hold on, why are we suddenly comparing "a roach eating your eardrum over an entire night of sleeping with a roach in your ear" to "10 minutes of sitting with a kid"? Like that comparison is clearly ridiculous and everybody, including you, knows it.

You're really mad, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-20 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, roach feasting on your insides would be more comparable to "kid throws sharp object at you or stabs you with a fork during a tantrum because they can't control themselves". In both cases, they can do serious bodily harm. The roach can lay eggs though, that's not great.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-20 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
If we're fully catastrophizing it, a roach probably can't kill you but children have killed people with guns, both accidentally and on purpose.

But taking it up to that level and to those extremes would be pretty ridiculous when the original conversation was about whether someone would rather be in a room with typical roaches or typical children for the same set amount of time, both of which usually pose no immediate harm to an adult human.

When I was a child we had roaches (it was a pretty normal thing to have too in here) and you can't forget roaches on a ceiling 👌
