His plan to turn into a giant demon snake is actually a big part of why he was able to reach her. Giles lacked the background and training to deal with a slayer like Faith because she was incredibly messed up before her powers were activated. Part of why she went of the rails was to escape judgement for the shitty stuff she did. She lacked morals and had a big ego with zero self esteem and that’s always a bad combination.

+1

Now - is it fair to her? No, probably not. She was at the end of the day just a teenage girl. But... I also don't know if I really believe that Giles or the Scoobies were capable of reaching her and helping her, given where she was and where she was coming from and everything. I don't think that's something she was capable of hearing at that point.

I think it's mostly just a tragedy, basically.

NAYRT - I find this interesting, as I've read the opposite. I think you make a good point. I do think the Scoobies and the adults all needed to work harder to take care of her, BUT who knows whether she would've been receptive to that. Giles could have had Faith live with him, or Joyce could have taken Faith in. But she might have recoiled had either of them offered. Etc.

I don't think any of the kids could have reached her. She needed an adult. I do think a non-demonic adult could have offered her the same/similar level of support as the Mayor, theoretically. However, that would have require an adult who both understood where Faith was coming from and was willing to actually focus on her. The adults in BtVS were mostly either entirely selfish or incapable of focusing on more than one other person at a time, so Faith was pretty much doomed from the get-go.

I think there are non-evil adults who could possibly have offered Faith the help, support and attention she needed but I don't think either Giles or Joyce was that adult.

I agree.
I will NEVER forgive Giles, Buffy, even Joyce for abandoning a traumatized minor in a skeevy hotel to just...go it alone. Yes, I know, they 'reached out' - but they were also incredibly judgemental (the Scoobies, too), jealous, and in general passive-agressive about her (especially Buffy, who didn't want to be the Slayer, wanted to do 'normal girl' stuff, then when she gets someone in her orbit who can actually take over some of the Slayer stuff she immediately gets all defensive and stupid).

Faith deserved a lot better, and if she'd been treated by the Scoobies, et al, more like the Mayor treated her (without encouraging her wild side), I don't think she'd have done most of the stuff she did.

TL:DR - Faith was not perfect, but she got treated like shite by everybody but the guy who wanted to become a demon and end the world.

I'd agree with this except for the fact that Buffy was also a traumatized minor and blaming her for not being able to deal with another, differently traumatized minor is sketch.

Buffy had a support group, and she could have, at the very least, just accepted that Faith was there and not made her friends think they had to choose sides.

I agree Buffy was traumatized, as well, but that doesn't excuse her worst actions, and REALLY doesn't excuse the adults. Faith's worst behaviors aren't excused, either, but she had literally no one on her side except for a psychopath.

With the sort-of exception of Giles, Buffy's support group turned on her hard at the beginning of season 3. They changed their minds, but it was pretty obvious to everyone that her support group was conditional. Willow was the leading charge of the "No Faiths" brigade, but she still had a shot with the rest of the gang right up until she threatened to rape and murder Xander.

Yeah, the adults had no excuse. But expecting a bunch of children to be able to deal with Faith's level of fucked up is not okay.

The Scoobies were always pretty mercurial when it came down to it; quick to suspect each other and to think the worst of each other in a lot of situations.

In a tv show where these 'children' do all sorts of stuff no actual kids do, and know just how awful things can be? I think they could have done better.

i'm not saying buffy made zero mistakes but buffy was a child and it was not her responsibility to handle faith, plus she was the only one interested in reaching out instead of punishing her after what happened. i would put the blame on the adults in sunnydale who didn't bother with her until she became a problem and they decided to punish her instead of trying to help her (looking directly at joyce and giles)

especially since faith being activated at all was still the fall-out of willow's fuck-up in the first place. that said, i think giles is the only person there who had a real responsibility to guide faith or at the very least find her a new watcher that you know...wouldn't manipulate her.

Wasn't Faith activated because of Kendra, and Kendra activated because of the Master temporarily killing Buffy? What am I forgetting about Wilow there?

yeah, you're right, i forgot which of buffy's deaths caused the off-shoot.

Ha, don't get me started on Willow....

I don't think the kids should have *fixed* it, but for sure they could have been more understanding, considering they, too, were going through all kinds of shite.

Giles in particular was just...useless. So infuriating.

fuck willow in particular

(Anonymous) 2024-09-24 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I've always found their relationship really sweet. Not good exactly, but definitely sweet.

I guess the watchers council really just see slayers as disposable. The responsible thing to do for a slayer without a guardian would be to get them a secure place to live, like the mayor did, at the very least. And pay them.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
imagine if anyone gave enough of a fuck about faith to look out for her instead of punishing her

i give buffy credit for trying but like, she's a child, faith's well-being shouldn't be her responsibility
