What horror novels/movies have you enjoyed? Or what kind of horror in general?

Relateable. I am tired of far wars, people trying to prove they are the biggest #1 super fan, and just general assholery. I have retreated from a few fandoms because of the drama. Unfortunately, one of the fandoms I'm a part of is known for being super toxic and it feels like I'm in an unhealthy relationship with it. I break away for awhile and then I go back eventually. I need to cut away for good but I am addicted or something.

Try "A Head Full of Ghosts" by Paul Tremblay. It wasn't exactly 'scary' but it was horrifying. And memorable.

You can see the learning process across the different books of Twilight, e.g. later villains had better setup than in the first book. People loved book 1 anyway.

I’ve stepped away from a few fandoms because I was just tired of everyone bitching about how much the show sucked. Like, why are you still watching it then?

It is a super dense book that took me over a year to read. But, it had one of my favorite lines from a horror novel.

Parts of this book I loved, others fell flat for me. Do you prefer less experimental/meta storytelling? I found it fun in this book but sometimes a bit up its own ass. Which worked at points and didn't at others, just my personal opinion.

His plan to turn into a giant demon snake is actually a big part of why he was able to reach her. Giles lacked the background and training to deal with a slayer like Faith because she was incredibly messed up before her powers were activated. Part of why she went of the rails was to escape judgement for the shitty stuff she did. She lacked morals and had a big ego with zero self esteem and that’s always a bad combination.

Horror recs?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-23 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to get into the horror genre but I really only found one or two movies I like: the Ritual and Temple.

Reason why this is a challenge: I don't like scare chords, dolls, puppets or similar objects, and I dislike animals being harmed even if it's a CGI animal.

Scare chords like music? Or when they do the jump scare noise?

Here are some recs that don't have dolls, puppets, or hurt animals but have interesting creature designs like The Ritual. Alien/Aliens, Underwater, Oujia: Origin of Evil, The Host, The Descent, Barbarian.

The Thing has some of the best monster design I've seen but unfortunately, a lot of animals are harmed. Mimic (1997) has a dead dog in it but it is pretty fake looking.

I'd check doesthedogdie.com to check out all triggers in each of the movies I suggested.

I'd also suggest that you try podcasts if you enjoy those! I can highly recommend knifepoint horror, The NoSleep Podcast, Wolf 359, We're Alive, Wrong Station, and some episodes of The Truth.
