Relateable. I am tired of far wars, people trying to prove they are the biggest #1 super fan, and just general assholery. I have retreated from a few fandoms because of the drama. Unfortunately, one of the fandoms I'm a part of is known for being super toxic and it feels like I'm in an unhealthy relationship with it. I break away for awhile and then I go back eventually. I need to cut away for good but I am addicted or something.

I’ve stepped away from a few fandoms because I was just tired of everyone bitching about how much the show sucked. Like, why are you still watching it then?

I hear that. Rampant negativity drove me away from a few places. And I know people are entitled to their opinion, but when someone can't seem to *shut up* about how much they hate something, ngl I side eye them a little and just think, wow, are they in the wrong place.

Preach.

I made a secret about this months ago, and people commented the main problem was that mine were dudebro canons. However, it's disturbing to see there's even more fandoms with those same problems I have, the constant negativity and hatred of a show.

There are fandoms where you can curate yourself into the good parts, but 1) it can be more effort than you want to expend on a hobby and 2) some fandoms are just hopeless.

If it’s not actual hate it’s claims that they love the thing but only in the context of their ship and/or head canons so it’s still negative because I’ve noticed a lot of people, especially of juggernaut ships, seem to spend more time concentrating on having a go at the people enjoying the property differently to them than actually enjoying their ship or whatever.

ayrt

I don't spend time in fandoms obsessed with ships, but I do notice it's something of a recurrent trait: People being focused on a specific element and mental image of a canon, that ultimately may develop differently, or be different, from what it used to be.

I agree with you in theory, but I don't think it's that new. Maybe it's just a matter of where you go. If anything, it seems to me that people were even more negative years ago.

I would say that it's not entirely new, but it's different.

It used to be a lot more nuanced. You could like parts of something and dislike other parts, and that was a normal part of being a fan. At this specific point in time, many fandoms are extremely all or nothing about this. You have to either love everything or hate everything, and the idea that you could like a book/movie/show/whatever and still dislike or even question certain things about it is anathema.

AYRT - I see. Yeah, that sounds extremely irritating.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-24 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I absolutely feel this. I feel like so many fandoms hate the actual source material and have completely made up a new one in their heads, but instead of that part being in good fun it's now "if you don't agree with this you're Evil, Actually" which is. I can never understand it lol. Isn't the joy of fandom getting to share different thoughts and keep building on the things you love with other people who love it just as much...

Yeah, I keep trying to figure out why, and from my guess, social media gives people a platform to be seen/heard and usually what gets the most attention is negativity. What gets people to keep paying attention is if it's for a righteous cause.

Because the internet was filled with a bunch of fandom nerds, the topics that got the most attention were about the social/moral failures of fandom-related things.

I don't really do fandoming anymore because I immediately become disinterested in the fandom/pop culture thing and literally feel worn down when I see people in the fandom complain about something. Most people turn it into their personality trait.
