Having lived through Brittney Spears' infamous meltdown in the 2000s, I don't think I'd be so quick to blame Chappell this time around.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's like people forget the level of stress someone might feel from being scrutinized and controlled every day, or something.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-08 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
like what exactly is she doing wrong about all of this? she's being treated like fuck and she's telling people - she's not chronically online or whatever you're implying?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-09 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
You are very angry and defensive. The secret says they feel for her, not that she is to blame.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-09 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
DA but a lot of the commentary that is "feeling bad for her" has a very weird tone where it's like, theoretically sympathetic but also almost frames it as her own fault for being too loud.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-09 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have to be chronically online for a break from social media to be beneficial. A lot of people might benefit from taking a break from social media, simply because social media is pretty toxic.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-09 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
"social media breaks are beneficial" is like "yoga is beneficial" but it won't cure actual diseases. people have accosted her in public IRL when she wasn't working/on stage too

like, "she needs to get off the internet" is NOT a solution to her actual problem, which is less doomscrolling and more "some people have no fucking boundaries"

I feel AWFUL about her depression and how she's struggling with her fame and how it's changed her life.

I don't feel any sympathy for her inability to shut up and get off the internet. She's 26. She should know when to step away. She's a grown-ass adult and it's weird the number of people who are infantilzing her for... totally predictable missteps.

Most of the backlash against her has been caused by her own inability to not respond to people. The backlash for saying she wasn't going to endorse Harris was completely predictable. Her doubling down on it just made it look worse. All she had to do was shut up and say nothing. If she's not endorsing someone--just don't say anything. It's really that easy.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-08 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, all of this.

I feel for her as she seems like an okay person but she is handling this all wrong. Just stop replying to people! Just full stop get off the internet for a hot minute and give yourself some time and room to breath.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-08 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
100% this. Just shut up and get off the internet and don't feel compelled to respond to every single person who says something about you. There's a reason most celebrities don't do that!

(Anonymous) 2024-10-09 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
The ultimate problem is you *cannot win* on the internet. There are just to many people. And if they actively dislike you the only thing you're doing is letting them know they're hurting you. And that's the goal! You've got to pull a Stephanie Meyer and not a JKR.

And also? Stepping into politics was an unforced error. If you've got something to say then *fine*, but saying you're not going to say anything? Man, shut the fuck up.

this is such a weird thing to say, like it feels like you don't understand the difference between print media (where the non-endorsement happened) and the internet, which is where people read it. she wasn't on the internet when she said she wasn't endorsing harris. she was wildly...doing her job as a popstar and speaking to press lmao. the problem is not that she's online. the problem is that her popstar persona is being young, outspoken, and political, and so she would get this response irrespective of being online

(Anonymous) 2024-10-10 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
DA

She did respond to the discontent about her non-endorsement with a video.

It's really bizarre. Tiktok is an app you can uninstall anytime, actually. I sympathize with mental health issues but... holy shit.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-09 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of people are forgetting that she's only 26, which means she is part of the generation that has grown up being on social media 24/7. It's really easy for us to say "well just get off the internet!" because we remember a time without constant social media access... she probably doesn't. It is a lot harder to just "get off the internet and stop replying" when people just aren't taught to disconnect.

Hi, Terfy.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-09 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Take your meds.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-09 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
I feel for her. I even get not having learned to keep silent on certain things because you might have good intentions but no matter how you say it, it will (rightfully) upset people.

The ONE thing I do blame her for is cancelling a comcert for VMA rehearsals. Yes, maybe/probably the better career move BUT cancelling for that on short notice? Not a good look. People spent hundreds of bucks to come see you (including travelling to another country) and you don't tell them in time for them to at least cancel hotels etc? That's just a dick move.
(Blaming her directly because it's always said that she's in control of the decisions)

(Anonymous) 2024-10-09 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I feel bad for her but also girl, you’re famous, you don’t owe internet trolls shit. She keeps responding to every criticism which makes things worse, she doesn’t need to dignify these things with a response. Like people are literally making videos about Beyoncé being involved in killing people, do you think Beyoncé is going to go make a Tiktok explaining that she isn’t murdering people? No, because she’s Beyoncé! Chappell needs to just step away from the internet for a while and let herself recover.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-09 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Beyoncé's path to fame was also a lot slower and low-key than Chappell's. I think that's another thing people forget when it comes to this: she had an insane rise to fame over only a few months and being overwhelmed by these circumstances is completely human.

Beyoncé had years to get used to fame in a time when celebrity culture and fan culture were a lot more low-key.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-09 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I know almost nothing about her, but I saw a tiktok where she says that she has bipolar disorder II (don't know when she said that). She really REALLY needs someone to help her manage the kind of stress she's under. I really wish her the best.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-09 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)

From everything I know about this: the problem is people on the internet, not her. What she's saying makes sense, but people getting up in arms about it anyway is such a case of tone policing and the internet as a whole not being able to see things more nuanced than black and white. If she were a dude I don't think the initial backlash would have been anywhere as big.

The only thing where I think she really made a mistake was in cancelling that one show last minute to go to some award show. But even then, the backlash is way out of proportion. The amount of people ranting online about this and thrashing her is ridiculous. "Can you imagine how all those people felt who spend hundreds of bucks for the concert?" Yeah, I can, it sucks. But why are YOU ranting about it, random person on the internet? You're borrowing other people's pain to virtue signal your own "righteous" anger. Sit down and shut up, person who isn't even tangentially affected by this.

People run to vent their emotional responses to her on social media, but when she posts her emotional response to social media she's in the wrong.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with the second part of your secret.
