What's your worst online habit?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-11 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I like to troll antis by telling them increasingly more absurd problematic ships or tropes I enjoy.

Distracting myself by either doomscrolling or clicking random videos instead of working on fic and other fanworks like I actually want to.

Also reading YT/social media comments. I'm an idiot and never learn.

Ugh. Sometimes I go to /r/conspiracy to see what they are being psychopaths about. I know I shouldn't because it just makes me sad. But there I am once a month.

Yep.

I think this depends a lot on the YT channels/social media pages you're on. I've seen decent comments sections on Lost in the Pond, Steve Shrives, and even Some Ordinary Gamers. Likewise, I sometimes comment on Pew Research's Facebook postings and have a pleasant experience.

I try and have conversations with people online when I know 90% of the time people don't care, they just want to throw a statement out and run. Setting myself up for disappointment yet I still do it.

Same here, nonny.

There are dozens of us. Dozens!

I do this, but I know I'm not going to change their mind. However, I can possibly sway people dropping by and reading the conversation who have no intention of participating themselves. I've adhered to this philosophy for a decade now, and it's been a rather useful tool/mindset to have.

I really like that.

For me I just enjoy the conversation and try and tell myself it is a bonus if anyone actually replies to take part.

I keep checking up on people I followed back in the day but muted or unfollowed eventually because their behaviour got toxic and/or the content they kept suddenly posting was a major squick for me. I always regret it.

Procrastinating on shows that I actually want to watch, because I'm too invested in my current online fandom and am afraid of losing interest when I'm not ready to.

Reading comments on things when I know they are just going to piss me off.

Honestly, reading FandomSecrets.

This place does give me good journal fodder, not gonna lie.

Re: What's your worst online habit?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. It's a lot less fun and way less nuanced since 2020 or longer.

Re: What's your worst online habit?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The lack of nuance is such a problem everywhere online and FS is definitely not spared that issue. It is incredibly frustrating.

Re: What's your worst online habit?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. In the early-mid 2010s, F!S was a decent break from the Tumblr brand black-and-white thinking in fandom. But now it's leaked onto here despite skewing older.

DA

I wonder if a lot of older people have had mental resources gobbled up by more drastic circumstances and have lost the capacity to approach things with nuance. I've actually seen really dramatic regression on this front on a writing website I've been a member of for many years.

Re: What's your worst online habit?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-12 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I'm not very old at all (I'm 30), but when I was younger I was acquainted with older people my mother's age who increasingly became more Like That the more online they became. Not to sound like an old man yelling at cloud boomer but I wonder if it's social media and Facebook being most adults main socialization, since third spaces have been slowly disappearing (if not entirely after Covid).

Same here. The black-and-white thinking is getting worse and has been for a while here.

When I'm troubled by something, I have a tendency to externalize it by acting more trollish than usual online.

I'm not proud of this, and I've gotten better about it. But I still have a ways to go.

Haven't done it in awhile, so this is probably an ex-habit. But I had a tendency not to mute/block people that annoy me. Frankly I just thought that I am easily annoyed and they are OK I just should scroll and wait. It always ended in me being absolutely enraged by something they do and blowing up. Apparently I am not that easily annoyed I just had to stop spending time on twitter.

Now my worst habit is reading AITA
