Uh, have you really never seen a good adaptation of any of Stephen King’s work? Like Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Carrie, Pet Semetery, Cujo, Cat’s Eye, Misery, or The Dead Zone?

(Anonymous) 2024-11-17 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The Dead Zone is edge of the seat brilliant. I don't know whether it's a good adaptation or not, but I love it.

I can’t remember all the differences but I seem to remember they added a some extra stuff to the miniseries and that I thought it was better than the book. But it’s been at least 30 years since I read the book and probably 15-20 since I last saw the series.

But a good movie is not automatically a good adaptation. As far as I know Stephen King doesn't consider most of these (or maybe even any of them) good adaptations of his works. Of course people are free to disagree with him. I never read any of his books so I wouldn't know.

All of those ARE good adaptations though. No they aren’t scene by scene to the written works but they keep the main and pivotal characters, the spirit, and all of the important and most of the unimportant scenes. That’s actually why I didn’t include The Shining because while it’s a fantastic movie, it’s a terrible adaptation of the novel.

Agreed. Like, I do not like the Shining. But there are good adaptions.

I can think of a bunch of Stephen King adaptions that would disagree with you.

The Shawshank Redemption, Stand by Me, The Green Mile, Carrie, Misery, The Shining etc.

The Shining may be a good movie, but it is not a good adaption. The others I agree with, though.

Pratchett I agree. King, well, see above

I even think the 90s miniseries for The Stand was pretty decent

it would have been better if certain characters hadn't disappeared without explanation or other characters hadn't just shown up, again with no explanation.

Counterpoint: Going Postal.

Counterpoint the second: The animated Wyrd Sisters.

I would argue that ALL of Kings adaptations have been better than the books. Shawshank, Hearts in Atlantis are peak. Even the ones that suck are still better than his writing. Gods, I tried, I really did try to read the Dark tower books.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-17 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The Dark Tower books are pretty bad. His one-off stuff is better.

I remember liking the Dark Tower books but there were only like 3-4 and then we had to wait many years for the rest and they like all hit at once it seemed. I heard they were terrible and couldn’t remember enough from the earlier books so never bothered with the new ones.

never read the Dark Tower books but I think Needful Things was one of his best books and the movie version was TERRIBLE.

Going Postal wasn't good, though. It was dull as hell and the actor playing Moist was bizarrely directed to have zero showmanship in his performance.

I think Doctor Sleep is a great movie. The other movies beloved by his fans have already been mentioned.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-18 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
People really (heh) slept on Doctor Sleep, they did an excellent job threading the needle of "adaptation of the book" and "sequel to Kubrick's the Shining."

So they're in the same club as Junji Ito then

(Anonymous) 2024-11-17 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Disappointed by the recent Uzumaki adaptation, I'm guessing?

I don't think it's an obvious Stephen King adaptation, but I love Stand By Me, it's one of my favorite movies of all time. Shawshank Redemption was also pretty damn good.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-18 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
The Mist is awesome and I loved Going Postal.
Also this authors are not unique - all adaptation are different from the books, it's a different medium. And how good it is depends on your view. For example I HATE Howl's Moving Castle movie. It's objectively a good animation but they lost everything I loved about the book so I am going to be salty forever about it.

I felt like "Stand By Me", "The Shawshank Redeption" and "The Green Mile" were good adaptations of King's books and were good films.

I'm not familiar enough with Pratchett's works to have any opinions there.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-18 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Too much of what makes a Pratchett book funny is in the characters' thoughts and the narration*, so I haven't seen an adaptation yet that really nails it. That said, I think the two Cosgrove Hall animations come the closest.
