It's a shame it got shafted, they were going for something way freakier this time for what it looked. Even more of a shame that the game is completely inaccessible outside a few PS4s that are sold specifically because they have the game.

I think it's because if the hero wasn't depowered or in a funk or generally at a low point, the problem in the sequel wouldn't be as much of a problem. They'd have stopped it before it started, or they wouldn't be in a position where a plucky new person/audience insert needed to have the mantle handed over to them.

For the Indiana Jones and Luke Skywalker examples, they're getting old! The natural storyline for them is fixing old regrets or times they dropped the ball, and part of that is being a bit of a sad sack at the start so you know they can mess up.

Okay, so I accept that Luke Skywalker in A New Hope starts as a relatively carefree character, but in that movie, he loses his aunt and uncle who raised him, loses a mentor that had a connection to his past that he wanted to know more about, almost gets killed a few different ways, and destroys a space station with a lot of people on it (bad people, but still). By the end of the original trilogy, among other things, he also almost dies a lot more, he loses another mentor, he finds out the father he thought was dead is an actually evil overlord, he loses his hand, he finds out he has a twin sister (that he kissed!), and he loses his father after said father sort of redeems himself.

I was trying to think of other movie characters I would consider carefree that also had sequels. So, both Elle Woods and Kevin McAllister start at high points in their respective sequels, though I will admit they are both quite quickly brought somewhat low. Deloris Van Cartier was doing okay.

You may have a point with the Ocean's sequels, the character lows did seem somewhat unnecessary.

It is an easy way for hack writers to jam in yet another copy of the hero's journey into their script. A lot of the time it is because the script actually came from a separate project but was bought and retooled for the franchise, and it was for a different hero who started their journey from a low point and the re-drafter just was too lazy or rushed or just didn't see the reason to change it or make it fit the new characters better.

Basically it is down to bad writing and a lack of imagination, but there are a variety of reasons that give rise to that bad writing.

It's not uncommon for someone to have a really good time at one point of their life only to lose their joy somewhere along the way.

In movie sequels, sometimes it works really well. Sometimes it's the writer's lazy way of getting the lead hero back to square one so they can essentially tell the same story again.

As I get older, I'm more willing to evaluate these sorts of stories on an individual level. Stories and people are repetitive, sometimes more obvious than others.

As tech levels rise, the further and further a protagonist has to go to enter the unknown, and the harder it is to get there. In modern day, we've got what, the deep oceans and space? Pretty much everything else is broadly known of, besides very specific little caves or whatever.

Before somebody complains about it, this isn't commentary on racism or colonialism or anything. More like a base principle thing: the more that is known about any world, real or fantasy, the less adventure there is to be found lying about, and the further a character has to go to find unexplored territory.

Too many people died in WW2. Again.

It killed off the Empires that saw and promoted the world as a wild playground ripe for adventure, it killed off the gentlemen explorers that the stories were about, and it brought about a Cold War with nuclear bombs that were inescapable and the knowledge of exactly what "civilised" people could do to each other - not random imaginary savage tribes in Foreignlandia.
