But a lot of them aren't actually turn-based anymore. To the point weher several games have turned off long-time genre fans because they don't enjoy the action adventure gameplay that has often replaced classic turn based gameplay.
The plot thing I kinda get but that's not limited to JRPGs - the main difference with JRPGs is how often the games end with your protagonist/player character sacrificing themself for the greater good.

I was about to say! The only big series that still are turn-based would be Fire Emblem, Trails, and Persona.

Even then with Kuro no Kiseki, Trails is leaning into action based gameplay as well. Not quite as much as Ys, but you can see the influence. I love gaming turn orders, stacking attacks, etc. and just don't see the appeal of action-centric RPG combat.

The plot thing I'll agree with. I can do any plot regardless of how tropey it is, as long as its earnest and executed well. But so many big name JRPGs now feel and play the exact same that I've started playing games either by smaller studios or just straight up looking at 15-20 year old JRPGs instead to get the experience I want.

And Pokémon! ... Pokémon's a JRPG, right? It's J, it's RPG - I'm reasonably sure there's more to it than that, but I never did work out what it was.

It’s been a while since I saw an Atlus game that involved collecting thingamabobs. And while I would never describe Compile Heart as good, they’re at least above thingamabob collecting. Come to think of it, does Square still do the thingamabobs they made their name on?

(You beat foes with combined power, granted, but that’s because you have multiple characters in your party.)

Wait, this pic has fucking Like a Dragon. That’s anything but thingamabob collecting.

This seems to be a secretmaker comment post, so they probably used random potentially unrelated rpgs.

I'm sorry, I'm distracted by how much Ryuji and Ann stick out in this image. The 2D animation draws the eye, lol.

The Dragon Quest (I assume) characters stand out, too... Kasuga and the FFVII characters are all relatively realistic...so Toriyama's style stands out, even in 3D. (Not sure why Ryuji and Ann's 2D sprites were used instead of their 3D models, honestly.)

Okay and WRPGs are at all "fresh?"

I'm sorry, I saw Ichiban Kasuga and only have positive things to say because Like a Dragon 7 is what got me into the Yakuza franchise (also, I like Ichiban, I think he's a sweetheart.) I've only played the sequel (Infinite Wealth), but I am fully invested enough that I recently bought the older games to play when I have free time (yes, I'm aware they are not JRPGs.) I just really like that the series embraces how utterly goofy and off-the-wall it can get.

I think fans 10-20 years ago just didn't have quite the same constant, massive flood of new AAA games to overwhelm them to the point they don't even know which ones they want to look into, much less actually get.
