Questions for Specific Professions

(Anonymous) 2024-12-03 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Post whatever questions you have for a specific profession, something you've always wanted to know about a specific career.

For example, I'm curious for those working in sex crimes - does the job heavily affect your own sex lives? I assume it does, of course, but does it make a healthy sex life near impossible? Is it very difficult to compartmentalize and leave work at work? I'm asking as respectfully as I can think to.

Do dentists get the same anxiety as the rest of us when they go for their check-ups / treatment?

Not sex crimes, but I worked in content moderation for a social media company, much of which involved CSAM and the burnout was extreme. I stopped being able to trust people (particularly but not only men) at all. I quit after about 18 months and will never, ever work in that field again. After talking to some people in the police who have done similar work, I would say that police are somewhat better supported than we were, even though they're dealing with worse stuff, and they get rotated out of that unit regularly. But there's still a whole culture of "I can cope because I'm saving lives" and it's not great.

For chefs, does cooking for your job ruin your own personal enjoyment of food at home?

Do criminal defense attorneys know when their clients are guilty, and how do they justify o themselves defending them (morally, religiously, ethically, whatever) when they have undoubtedly committed heinous crimes (murder, child abuse, SA). I know this all sounds incredibly naive.

Yall know when you are eating something you enjoy but then bite into a weird texture

And realize you can't eat that food for at least a few months? RIP Costco chicken nuggets.

I go through this with eggs all the time. Though sometimes it isn't even a texture thing, just suddenly halfway through the meal my brain decides to switch from Eggs Are Delicious to Eggs Are The Grossest Thing You Could Ever Eat.

What are your favorite Christmas movies?

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Love Actually, despite— well, the movie.

The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Not a movie, but Veronica Mars's season one Christmas episode.

One Magic Christmas, which no one has ever heard of but my family.

It starts with a mom deciding not to believe in christmas and the next day her husband gets shot trying to stop a robbery and the robber jumps in their running car and drives off with her two kids in the backseat and then drives the car off a cliff into a lake and they are all drowning. AND THEN an angel comes and saves the kids so they can make the mom believe in the magic of christmas so time can reset and bring their father back to life. Henry Dean Stanton is exquisite in this film and the 80s were a wild time to make christmas films apparently.

The animated Grinch Who Stole Christmas

And as a slightly “edgier” answer… The Ice Harvest

A crime movie, set at Christmas. Lots of family disfunction and the depressing air of a strip club decorated for the holiday.

A Christmas Story! You'll shoot your eye out!
I love Charlie Brown Christmas but that's not a movie, it's a TV special

I don't do christmas least of all movies but I gotta say the American Dad holiday episodes are the best, particularly "For Whom the Sleigh Bell Tolls." The line "I hope you did, you buttlicker!" lives rent-free in my lexicon. The rapturepocalypse is a close second.
