Questions for Specific Professions

(Anonymous) 2024-12-03 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Post whatever questions you have for a specific profession, something you've always wanted to know about a specific career.

For example, I'm curious for those working in sex crimes - does the job heavily affect your own sex lives? I assume it does, of course, but does it make a healthy sex life near impossible? Is it very difficult to compartmentalize and leave work at work? I'm asking as respectfully as I can think to.

Do dentists get the same anxiety as the rest of us when they go for their check-ups / treatment?

Good question! I wonder if you trust them more less.

My dentist does; it definitely makes her a better dentist! She understands the anxiety.

Not sex crimes, but I worked in content moderation for a social media company, much of which involved CSAM and the burnout was extreme. I stopped being able to trust people (particularly but not only men) at all. I quit after about 18 months and will never, ever work in that field again. After talking to some people in the police who have done similar work, I would say that police are somewhat better supported than we were, even though they're dealing with worse stuff, and they get rotated out of that unit regularly. But there's still a whole culture of "I can cope because I'm saving lives" and it's not great.

DA
In the late 2000s, I worked for an image hosting site for a couple months. We were mods checking for pictures and short videos that were against policy (mostly nudity/porn).

It was rough some days. I definitely would never want to do that sort of work again, and I believe companies that host content that anyone can just load up definitely need to invest (heavily) in mental health support for employees that work on vetting content.

For chefs, does cooking for your job ruin your own personal enjoyment of food at home?

I'm not a chef myself, but I've been acquainted with a few and it depends on what kind of job they have, but when they get home they definitely don't feel like cooking anything elaborate, nor are they particularly picky about food. I think they're just 1) glad to be fed and 2) extra glad they didn't have to make it themselves!

Do criminal defense attorneys know when their clients are guilty, and how do they justify o themselves defending them (morally, religiously, ethically, whatever) when they have undoubtedly committed heinous crimes (murder, child abuse, SA). I know this all sounds incredibly naive.

Criminal defense attorneys believe in the system. If even the worst criminal can't have all the legal protections of the law, then it would easy to take it away from the innocent too. With the worst crimes where there is a lot of evidence, more often than not the attorney is focusing on getting a lesser sentence, not necessarily on getting their client fully off. But mostly they just believe in the system and that everyone should get to be defended in court.

I'm not sure I could do it personally. Then again I could never be a prosecutor either. And I really admire the public defender attorneys personally.
