(Anonymous) 2024-12-11 12:23 am (UTC)(link)So, you would in fact be incorrect to claim the EU was never any level of canon at any point. But anyone claiming it was at the same level as the movies is also wrong. I would not be the slighest bit surprised if there was now infighting over whether new movies supersede rank or if the EU was unfairly dis-ranked from canon entirely. If I had any investment in the fandom I probably would be mad that someone somewhere decreed canon un-canon.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-11 01:32 am (UTC)(link)But also: The EU was second only to the movies and for a lot of fans, it was second only to the OT. It was like an adjacent canon at first and then kinda grew from there. So I can also totally understand why EU fans are still bitching about what happened.
The EU was rich with awesome characters, world building, and fantastic stories. If there were going to be more movies, it made sense to draw from the EU. Instead we got the sequel trilogy which not only wasn’t as good but effectively shit all over the EU’s legacy and fandom. There was no reason to handle it the way they did.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-11 03:08 am (UTC)(link)I read a few of the novels way back and thought they were pretty cool extensions (and I also liked the TV movies - Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, whatever I was young). But even then, 80s and early 90s, the way that some people who considered themselves real fans behaved was alarming.
I decided I was mostly done with any new Star Wars stuff after I was disappointed by the Prequel Trilogy (I kept thinking it would get better or redeem itself in the end and it didn't, not for me). Given some of the developments in last ten years in both the canon and some parts of the fandom, I am okay with that decision.
So, in my head, the Original Trilogy, the TV movies (not the holiday one), and the first Thrawn Trilogy are my canon; the Prequel Trilogy is a sensationalized and distorted version of what actually happened, a based-on-true-events version, if you will; and everything after that Thrawn Trilogy is different timelines that I'm not really concerned about (though maybe Grogu, he's very cute, from the clips I've seen).
Wow, I guess I have a lot of feelings about this. Anyway, I get you.
