He WHAT NOW? Holy shit.

If you can get the MMR vaccine too definitely get that. Measles is incredibly contagious and fucks your immune system even if you don't get a bad case. I'm in my 40s and in the generation that only got one measles vaccine, which means it had entirely worn off by the time I checked it, and paying for two doses was worth it. (I was old enough that I actually had mumps and chicken pox before there was a vaccine.)

AYRT—I've had the MMR, TDAP, covid, and hepatitis A & B shots, and I've had two of the three-shot HPV series. So polio is the last that's commonly given and covered in the US that I haven't had. I started getting vaccinated in my teens after fighting with my parents (I cut open my hands on rusty sheet metal when I caught a sculpture that fell off the wall of a high school classroom, and I refused to die of lockjaw for my dad's bullshit hangups.)

I'd get the monkeypox vaccine if I could, both because the newer variants apparently spread way more readily and because if any HHS agency was gonna oversee a resurgence in pox viruses, the one headed by RFK Jr would be it.

And I wish the Biden administration had rolled out an H5N1 vaccine for people, or even just authorized an existing one for poultry; I have a couple old hens left, and I worry for them and me both.

Plus I live in a part of the US where zika and dengue are both starting to be issues thanks to climate change. Yay, we're doomed.

I got the MMR vaxx when I was a baby. Am I still protected or do I have to get another one now?

(Anonymous) 2024-12-14 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends. Did you get two shots, one as a toddler and another at 10-12 yo? If yes, then you’re good. If you only got one, get vaccinated again.

Think I only got the one as a baby. Damn. Have to call my doctor.

I'm in my 40s and was surprised when my doctor urged me to get another round of vaccines (which I did). He said whooping cough had re-emerged with the recent swell of immigration from countries that can't afford to vaccinate.

Now before folks come out with pitchforks calling me racist Trump scum (not a fan, didn't vote for him, have no issues with legal immigration)... it's worth considering that the NYT just ran an article showing that immigration has been higher in the past four years by percentage than in the entirety of US history. It seems that would inevitably bring public health challenges, especially in a country with a for-profit health care system. So it seems absolutely bizarre to me that the Anti-Immigration Czar-in-Chief would hire an anti-vaxxer to be in charge of the Department of Health. While eliminating the Department of Education. God, we're totally fucked. And I totally blame the far left running around calling everyone racist and dumb and acting like we're not in a class war that's only been worsened by unprecedented levels of immigration. /rant

Honestly, given the state of things in so many countries, it isn't surprising that immigration is higher. It is, it is just that the reason isn't Democrat policies. The reason is horror in other countries. So the way to slow immigration is to help in those countries.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-14 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right that the reason isn't Democratic policies. The same NYT article showed that immigration under Obama was the lowest since the 1950s. Unfortunately, his administration was not very good with foreign policy.

The problem is that we lack a functioning legislative branch to create any immigration policy at all, so policy is left to the political whims of the executive branch.

And I'm not sure why any country would want American "help". That has never seemed to work out well for anyone but the corporations providing the "help".
