My parents couldn't get it through their heads that it was perfectly normal for me to not like school.

It'd be weirder if you liked school...

that's what I thought. My parents are weird.

That's so weird. Like your parents don't remember what it was like to be a kid or something. I mean, I didn't HATE school most of the time, but no way is it more fun than staying home, sleeping in and spending all day reading.

they also spent a lot of time when I was a kid telling me I read too much. They felt there was something wrong with me because I didn't find it at all entertaining to randomly run around in the yard.

I'm getting Matilda flashbacks. My sympathies, man.

thank you

I fucking hated school, both the experience and the lessons. There was nothing fun about learning, and I didn't enjoy getting bullied. The only classes that didn't make me want to run out of the room screaming were math and music.

Oh, man. You know what else I hated? Adults asking me if I liked school and then telling me I must not be as smart as they'd thought if I told them (honestly) that I really didn't. Even as a little kid, that felt like a very dirty betrayal.

The upside was, that taught me what it felt like to lie deliberately, with a straight face and with zero remorse. I just ... decided that I don't owe absolutely anything to people who treat thinking well of me like a reward for saying what they want to hear.

I don't blame you for being pissed, what a shitty thing to say to a kid.
Some of my parents friends sometimes used to ask me about my grades, which I thought was too nosey.
I love Peanuts but I was disappointed in something I'd heard about Schulz. He apparently asked several young women he'd just met (who were fans of his) if they got all A's in school, which I think is an obnoxious question.

Schulz said that to fans of his? Wow.

And yeah - I think the other is nosy, too. That's like asking an adult what their last performance review at work said.

Ewww. Who the hell says that to a kid?

AYRT

In my case, way too many people. If it had just been one or two, I would have been a lot more inclined to just go "well, that particular adult just sucks."
