What are things you were supposed to like as a kid, but didn't?

Re: Based on #3

I'm sorry to admit that Mr. Roger's bored me. 😔

Re: Based on #3

(Anonymous) 2025-01-22 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. :( As an adult, I appreciate what he did, but as a kid, he bored me.

Same! But I never admit it.

Re: Based on #3

(Anonymous) 2025-01-22 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. I thought it was a baby show and preferred The Electric Company.

As an adult, I appreciate it more.

I thought Mr. Rogers was great, but I was trying to learn English as a second language at the time, so the combination of his having interesting things to say about a limited amount of subjects, often showing videos that illustrated what he was talking about (let's find out how bowling balls are made), and enunciating carefully and deliberately were all very helpful. And then I just found him interesting, with his puppets and earnest emphasis on unconditional love and his unusual plot twists in the trolley-land.

I can understand why you'd find him boring as he was just ... doing everything really slowly in a show that had minimal suspense or conflict, though. XD;

Hmmm....cheesey salty snacks, like Cheetos. Really, anything with an artifical cheese flavor. Blegh.

My parents couldn't get it through their heads that it was perfectly normal for me to not like school.

It'd be weirder if you liked school...

That's so weird. Like your parents don't remember what it was like to be a kid or something. I mean, I didn't HATE school most of the time, but no way is it more fun than staying home, sleeping in and spending all day reading.

Oh, man. You know what else I hated? Adults asking me if I liked school and then telling me I must not be as smart as they'd thought if I told them (honestly) that I really didn't. Even as a little kid, that felt like a very dirty betrayal.

The upside was, that taught me what it felt like to lie deliberately, with a straight face and with zero remorse. I just ... decided that I don't owe absolutely anything to people who treat thinking well of me like a reward for saying what they want to hear.

Nancy Drew. I even liked mysteries, just not those.

Re: Based on #3

(Anonymous) 2025-01-22 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Same, though I did like it when Nancy got tied up and threatened! But I jumped from Famous Five to Agatha Christie pretty much, so going back to the teen books (Hardy Boys too) was just not interesting to me.

Most toys. American cartoons. Junk food. Toilet humor. Other kids. School. Being complimented on anything - although I think I liked that one before school sort of ruined it for me.

I was fortunate enough to have parents who figured out how to have a good time with the kid they had, though, as opposed to insisting that I had to like what "kids" are expected to like, so that helped considerably.

Soda/pop. I didn't like the carbonation at all.

Sesame Street pissed me off. It seemed like they were constantly doing the visual and auditory equivalent of trying to wave a laser pointer dot in front of my face, because they figured kids were too stupid to focus on one thing for more than twenty seconds, or really on anything that didn't aggressively work at holding their attention. I had a very long attention span. The gimmicks, shouting, and over-emotional puppets racing around chasing each other in their little skits just made me turn the television off and retreat to one of my books.

There were several fad things I didn't get at all. I thought Cabbage Patch Kids were ugly, Pound Puppies weren't for me, I never really went for the jelly bracelets (or the jelly shoes), and I thought the troll dolls were awful.
