I can't tell if you're being sarcastic, but I always enjoy when content creators taunt the annoying, entitled subset of their commenters.

Secret OP Here
100% not sarcastic

I was inspired to submit this secret when Matt Bernstein's podcast episode about Blake Lively's lawsuit with Kat Tenbarge came out a couple weeks ago

https://youtu.be/_aOwIK9q8Ns?si=L6S__ouKwm-kTykk

Another podcast that took time to address comments they received about vocal fry is You're Wrong About. I howled with laughter when I listened to that episode a couple years ago.

Too bad You're Wrong About is hosted by people who are totally unconcerned with whether something is actually true. They're basically like the liberal equivalent of Ann Coulter: if a fact is boring, or doesn't support something they already believe, they'll drop it.

I don't remember when everyone suddenly becoming aware of vocal fry became a thing, but the complaining about it is more annoying than the vocal fry now

(Anonymous) 2025-01-25 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I even know what a vocal fry is? I've seen people complain about them but I'm not sure I've heard what it's meant to be honestly.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-25 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I had to look up what that meant and I'm still not 100% certain that I understand. It's not really something I notice myself, either.

It's when your voice is all gravelly and creaky (as opposed to smooth and smokey), like when recovering from a cold. It sounds vaguely damaged and very low pitched.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-25 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
See, it seems a bit weird to me to complain about vocal fry like it's some sort of quirky affection instead of... someone's voice.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-25 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people do it on purpose when it's not actually their normal voice. People tend to criticize it in women more often then men because women aren't "supposed" to have deep and gravelly voices. I personally prefer vocal fry, but it does get annoying when people fake it. I'm not going to complain about it though, just turn the thing off and go do something else.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-25 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Can you think of an example of someone who fakes vocal fry? Genuinely curious.

My experience is that people complain about a woman having vocal fry whenever they don't like what she has to say. I feel like any podcast about any controversial topic presented by a woman has, "UGH HER VOCAL FRY" comments on it, even if her voice was well above that register.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-25 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It isn’t actually the voice though. It’s the result of either shitty equipment, shitty mic placement, or shitty sound mixing.

I don’t think you’re discussing the same phenomenon that is generally meant by “vocal fry”.

It’s not an audio recording artifact. It’s a sort of vocal register and can be produced “live”.

No, this is an actual thing.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-26 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
I would describe vocal fry as lower equivalent of falsetto. Someone is speaking below their real voice.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-25 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I’ve never mentioned it to anyone but vocal fry is one of the main reasons I’ll quit a podcast. A Blue Yeti, a pop filter, and mixer will run them maybe $200. If they can’t be bothered to produce at least the bare minimum in audio quality, I won’t help them generate revenue.

Okay, so you’re the second person to mention it as an issue with sound recording.

Do you mean that you consider vocal fry something that can’t happen when you’re speaking face-to-face with someone?

Or that the right sound equipment and software will artificially remove it to produce a more pleasing vocal tone?

(Anonymous) 2025-01-25 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It shouldn’t be present any more than pops and background noise. That’s the point of using the right equipment.

So is it something that you can hear in a normal face-to-face conversation with someone, no audio recording involved?

Most of the complainers are bots. And the vocal fry is digitally added. The algorithm rewards conflict so the more bots you draw, the more you profit.

I wouldn't leave a comment, but it is def a reason I wouldn't watch. It just grates on my nerves to listen to it.

As someone with vocal fry when speaking naturally, I get why people hate it but it also makes me happy to see this secret.
