I have a mutual who’s in this fandom. They said the amount of grieving this fandom did when a character cut his hair was roughly equivalent to how much another fandom grieved when three characters died. I’m willing to buy that this fandom overblows things.

That's exactly how Raoul should be portrayed. He's a brat. He's the "safe" choice that isn't much better than the Phantom in terms of objectifying Christine and wanting her more as a prize to inflate his own ego than as a real companion. Such a lose-lose situation for her.

Now I'm interested in this version because I've always found that song to be damned near insufferably boring.

There's partners for every taste. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes in what they want to write, as well as styles, so it's a matter of finding the ways in which you can two mesh. Just as well, either finding new partners for that sort of stuff, or even writing on your own.
