What are some secrets that aren't fandom, but still relate to the internet?

I had a dream I met some old online friends I knew as a teenager IRL a few days ago. I was very sad when I woke up :(

I'm aware that I spend way too much time online, and that it's an unhealthy coping mechanism for feeling overwhelmed and unhappy with stuff in real life. But it's the least unhealthy coping mechanism I have, and my options for fixing the real life stuff are very limited, so here I am...

I think that's the case for a lot of people, sadly.

Oh yeah, absolutely. For better or for worse, I know I'm not alone.

I actually like Reddit. It's really no worse than forums back in the day. Some were awful, some were okay, some were great. Same thing with subreddits.

+1

I’d be lost without Reddit tbh. It’s been a huge help for me in learning about new hobbies and also forging positive social connections, which I’d been lacking since everyone migrated from LJ.

DA but any reccs for good communities? My account is collecting dust.

I’m into hiking and backpacking so I love r/backpacking and r/ultralight as well as some of the major trail subs like r/pacificcresttrail.
I wanted to build my own gaming PC so I joined a few pc gaming subs including r/buildapc which was an invaluable resource for me. Just yesterday I was on there reading old posts after searching “scared” because I have everything but am too intimidated to actually build. It was reassuring to see how common that is for first timers and people who are returning after a long time.

r/animalsbeingbros and r/animalsbeingjerks are my favorite non hobby and non fandom subs.

I love my city sub because I get all the tea without having to get involved in any drama.

And for fandom, it’s been great for me. But every fandom is different so ymmv. The gaming subs I’m in are especially awesome and for one of my games I’m pretty active in helping newer players, which has been good for me.

I also check in on book subs a lot even if I haven’t joined them. r/fantasy, r/suggestmeabook, and r/whatsthatbook are my favorites. Oh and I like r/kindle because outside of that sub I’m in the minority by exclusively using my Kindle to read and people can be pretty snotty and even shitty about me using an ereader. But on r/kindle, it’s like a constant celebration of everything I love about using an ereader.

If you have a hobby do a search for it. All the smaller hobby subs have been such great communities ime. R/crochet and r/crochethelp have been great as I start to learn crochet.

R/ireadabookandadoredit is a fun little sub for sharing a book you enjoyed or seeing other users recs.

r/marijuanaenthusiasts if you like trees - just pictures of and learning about. The name always gives me a laugh too.

My travel specific subs I like include r/solotravel r/shoestring r/onebag and r/heronebag

Some random ones that have a good vibe: r/mapmaking r/patientgamers r/AIDKE

I prefer reddit for a lot of my fandoms.

On the internet, no one knows you're a dog. Which is why I never believe anyone who tries to shame people who correct them or calling them out by claiming to have autism.

Also, I just got diagnosed as having autism. The irony.

I mean, a lot of people who are very online are also autistic. It's not a get out of jail free card, but it doesn't mean they're lying, either!

So many of our friends and family members that are around are age (middle age) have turned into phone zombies.

This may be hypocritical of me because I do spend downtime goofing off online or playing games, but when people visit or we're out to dinner or at a bar, I put that shit down and converse. My partner picked up his brother at the airport (who he hasn't seen for almost a year) and he was playing a loud phone game in the car instead of conversing. Like, what are you, 14?

My mom, who obviously taught me manners, and I went to a recital for my eldest niece (she was about 7 or so?). Mom gave her phone to my youngest niece (about five, to keep her occupied during the show) with the volume at 100% and then got pissed at me when I took the phone away and muted it before giving it back. AT A RECITAL. wtf

nayrt but I know! My dad's phone goes off at top volume all hours of day or night because he has a lot of family on the other side of the world so they're messaging either really late or really early. I'm like, you know you can turn off sound notifications so you don't disturb everyone around you, right?

I would have begged for a phone to relieve my boredom as a kid in church, but that's still not an acceptable place to use one.

I don't know why parents in particular are so unable to notice that their kids have the volume turned up on their devices. I was near a toddler in a plane and the flight attendant had to step in because we were all so pissed and the parents ignored everyone.

I really do not understand people like this. I disagree with handing a child a device to occupy their attention at all times but if people are going to do it, spend the $20 on kids headphones.
