I think it's an even mix of poor styling and a face that tends towards more mature

I don't know about her specifically, but Gen Z tend to do heavier skin care earlier than they necessarily need it, consume more nicotine, and avoid sunscreen more than their predecessors (though the sunscreen thing is a more recent trend, and definitely varies depending on what tiktoks they consume).

Do you know the reason for avoiding sunscreen?

Sunscreen is "chemicals" and therefore bad. They can't tell you what the chemicals are and why they're bad, but chemicals are bad.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-12 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the same logic as not wanting preservatives in make-up because preservatives are a chemical and therefore 'bad' without understanding what preservatives do, and then some brands came out with 'clean' make-up that didn't put any in had the make-up go mouldy within a few months. Shocker!

some people took 'make sure to source your sunscreen from reliable brands, because some contain cancer-causing ingredients' to 'your sunscreen is going to give you cancer so don't use it!'

The sunscreen thing just makes me shake my head as a 40-something who routinely gets mistaken for being a college student because I've worn sunscreen religiously my entire life. Sun exposure is, without question, the single biggest contributor to visible aging.

Yeah those videos comparing Gen Z and Millenial Aging are making more sense now. We go through all the trouble of accepting that nicotine is bad, sunscreen is good, and fillers are for when you actually have wrinkles, and Gen Z just wants to give us the finger by doing what Millenials don't.

Really seems to be working out for them, huh?

I mean, that's kind of an uncharitable take. Just like millenials getting screwed over by the intense focus on diet and party culture (and now more-or-less overcompensate with a focus on indulgent self-care and celebrating introversion), gen z got the intensive thick make up, 'vapes are fun and cool', and quirky being celebrated and are over-compensating by focusing on skin care, ditching chemicals (many are still vaping, thanks nicotine addiction), and trying to focus on digital community building, which is not great on mainstream social media and is 1000% making them miserable and lonely.

Nicotine is not much of an issue compared to the hazards of cigarette smoking. And nicotine is a HUGE self-medication cope for people with ADHD, fyi.

Nicotine is a highly addictive stimulant, and vaping is still bad for you even though it's a different set of chemicals being pumped into your lungs. Just because something helps alleviate specific symptoms in the moment doesn't make it good for you, particularly over time.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-13 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Vaping is terrible for your health. The lower risk of cancer is offset by the higher risk of popcorn lung, and it's pretty much a wash as far as asthma and COPD go. Stick to Nicorette or the patch if you need a nic fix.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-13 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Vaping is definitely bad for you, it the evidence for it causing popcorn lung is slim. That particular danger has been vastly overstated.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-13 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Nicotine is not much of an issue compared to the hazards of cigarette smoking."

Yep, that's what people who vape claim in order to justify vaping. Nicotine is bad for you. Just because smoking cigarettes is worse doesn't mean that vaping is okay.

"And nicotine is a HUGE self-medication cope for people with ADHD, fyi."

And yet, that doesn't make it healthy, either. Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol is a HUGE self-medication cope for people with depression. Doesn't mean it's a good idea.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-13 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who struggles with unhealthy vices due to unmedicated ADHD, please don't defend nicotine because some of us resort to it to cope. That doesn't make it any less harmful health-wise. ND people falling into these things is a societal issue, it's like saying alcohol is healthy because bars are a part of LGBT culture. It still is bad.

I find most zoomers frustrating but this is super rude... A lot of these generational differences is from growing up in a different time, not to purposely rebel against what millennials were taught.
