I don't blame you. But it's worth noting that the community back then was a whole different kind of toxic. At least nowadays there's some moderation and an expectation of basic civility. Although it still took over 10 years to ban Bright...

Love how far entries came around, but I do miss some feelings of the series 1. Won't hurt to pitch it to the moderation anyway, imo.

I was around for the early days, although only as a reader. I don't particularly miss the Dr "literally everything is rape" Clef days.

I think SCP was lightning in a bottle. It was kind of happenstance that it blew up; it was just a bunch of nerds RPing (and lets be honest, inserting their fetishes into it more often than was comfortable). It's ballooned into something that really doesn't resemble anything it was. And that's fine. The 00s net was a place that I think would really shock people now - actually, I think it would even shock people who were in it to go back and actually compare the differences. Horror mores reflect that, and a lot of the stuff on early SCP would feel at best lazy and at worst insanely bigoted by today's standards.

Anyway I'm getting distracted by the infographic. How is Carlisle so rich? Gatsby's number seems low, is that not adjusted for inflation? If it's not adjusted how are they comparing fantasy characters with ones from stuff set in the real world?

God yes. I also see this A LOT with fandom puriteens drawing up giant ass DNF/DNI lists and then go out of their way to seek out/interact with the things (mainly ships) they put on their list. And then they play the victim and wave their DNI lists around when people tell them to fuck off.

Book Recs?

I'm trying to get back into reading and I just downloaded a new epub app on my phone. What should I be reading? I like historical nonfiction (Nancy Goldstone is my favorite author for that kind of stuff and I have all of her books!) and I guess light fantasy and low scifi? My favorite fiction authors are TPrachett, Jeanette Winterson, Umberto Eco, and Connie Willis.

I downloaded the Joannes Cabal books because I started the first one years ago and remembered liking it. I also got the Immortal Life of Nicholas Flamell series because I liked the first one when it came out and someone on tumblr said it ended strong at six books. I also picked up some Grishaverse books because I love the Crows from the TV show. So, tell me, F_S, what should I be reading?

I'm not familiar with Nancy Goldstone (but will look her up, thanks for the rec!) but one of my favorite historical fiction authors is Sharon Kay Penman - not her mystery series, but the longer books about the Welsh Princes and the Plantagenets. Her "The Sunne in Splendour" is one of the few pro-Richard III portrayals I can stand because she's sympathetic, but doesn't write him like he was a saint.

And I really enjoyed Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom way more than the Shadow and Bone stuff, so hope you like it!
