sometimes the movie is actually better than the book, though. If you loved the movie Forrest Gump, DON'T READ THE BOOK!!

(Anonymous) 2025-03-21 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I'm curious, how bad is the book?

I much prefer the book to the movie Forrest Gump. Not that there aren't problems with the book, but I think they are glaring and obvious. But in the book Forest is allowed to just be angry, and he has a more mutual and equal relationship with Jenny, and it's so much better than him being the special innocent who is always good and who knows what love is, but not what sex is. The movie treats him like an idiot.
I loved the movie when I was twelve, but when I read the book a few years later it gave me a lot more to think about.

Same with Jaws. I wanted the shark to eat them all and end my reading. I made it through and immediately donated the book.

Three words...

Three words. Children. Of. Men.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-21 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes people just prefer and/or connect better with one type of media over another. It's not that deep.

I had someone argue to me that the book of Howl’s Moving Castle was “too basic and conventional”, as compared to the movie

I felt like we had read two different books

(Anonymous) 2025-03-22 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it didn't have "war is bad" plot line /s

(Anonymous) 2025-03-22 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Nothing Diana Wynne Jones wrote was basic or conventional, her novels were fantastical chaos.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-22 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I normally like the book and the movie equally if I enjoy the adaptation and some movie adaptations I really like as stand alone movies but as an adaptation they're.... not exactly accurate, lol.

I'm not sure how books by their very nature are more interesting though, sure they make you use your imagination but there are many books that are very, very simple in execution and really not overly interesting.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-22 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
From the wording, specifically saying “certain adaptations”, I’m reading this secret as actually being motivated by one book-to-movie adaptation in particular

I would be interested to know which one it is

I love the movie Stardust, but a friend told me not to read the book.

The book isn't terrible, but the movie is much better.

I love the movie and was disappointed when I read the book, so probably a good call.

I read the book first, and normally (especially at the time) I am very "The book was better! They changed it now it sucks!"

The movie is much, much, much better than the book. Don't worry about it.

I liked some parts of the book more (the ending for example. It was less saccharin). But movie is indeed better. And also now reading NG books is just icky

I liked the fairytale tone of the book and prefer it for the most part. But the movie's pirate section is fun, and I prefer the movie ending because I'm a sap.

Honestly I think this is more of how good an adaptation is, versus any substantial book>movie thing tbh. It's really dependant on how it's directed and what changes are enacted to accommodate a different media style. There are plenty of movies in which many would say they liked better than the book and vice versa due to adaptation issues/poor acting/etc.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-22 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Certain adaptations" is doing a lot of work here. Like sure, maybe. Depends on the book/movie.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-22 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that may be true. Or that may be true for just that particular story. Or that particular adaptation just works for them in some way the book didn't - they really liked the visuals, or they really didn't like something in the book that the movie got rid of, or the movie changed a character enough that it didn't remind them of someone in real-life, or the book felt rambly to them, or the dinosaurs were frickin' awesome (yeah, I know you probably weren't talking about Jurassic Park), or the music added so much to the story, or the movie made them realize something about the story that they didn't pick up from the book, etc.

Good secret. Weird opinion. Beautiful image.

The Neverending Story

(Anonymous) 2025-03-22 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This is kinda how I feel about people who tell me that the movie of The Neverending Story told a better story than the book.

Uh, I guess, if what you want is a small variation on a portal fantasy.

The book is so deliciously weird and takes the story in dark direction I’d never seen in a fantasy for children before. And they just excised most of that to fit a more conventional movie structure.

As a fan of both, the only thing I like better in the movie, is that Artrax doesn't speak. I feel that gives the Swamp scene a higher gravitas than how it is dealt in the book. Then again, I totally get why he needs to speak in the book.

OTHER than that? the book is superior in every way.

1. Many simple and conventional stories are beloved classics for a reason. Also, not everyone needs or wants to engage in more "interesting" stories for their media consumption.

2. I will die on this hill: The Princes Bride movie >>>>>>>> book.
