Well, that may be true. Or that may be true for just that particular story. Or that particular adaptation just works for them in some way the book didn't - they really liked the visuals, or they really didn't like something in the book that the movie got rid of, or the movie changed a character enough that it didn't remind them of someone in real-life, or the book felt rambly to them, or the dinosaurs were frickin' awesome (yeah, I know you probably weren't talking about Jurassic Park), or the music added so much to the story, or the movie made them realize something about the story that they didn't pick up from the book, etc.
