I can't believe I thought that

(Anonymous) 2025-03-30 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Drop all the things you can't believe you once thought. Or, things you think you should have known, but aren't sure.

I thought Kimberly-Clark was owned by a woman named Kimberly Clark for way too long of a time. My brain never registered the dash between Kimberly and Clark, I guess.

So many of the things I learned growing up in a fundamentalist community that I just bought into. Like, I knew that most of the sexist stuff was crap (minus the anti-choice stuff that I bought for a long time). But I still bought into so much of it, and it makes me sad that I accepted it for so long.

Same. Like i am glad that I at least started to realize as a teen how overly MEAN the church community was to LGBTQ people but i really hate that it wasn't I until i started to realize i wasn't entirely straight myself to see that there was NOTHING wrong with being queer/gay at all.

I didn't grow up in anything more than a typical midwestern Catholic family but I still couldn't escape it. when every adult around you acts as if they really do believe this stuff, a kid can't break the conditioning. Oh, you say there's a god and he wants me to only X/never Y? Okay I guess I'll go along.

I should've known today was a bad day to drive. Too many idiots and not enough patience on my end.

Full House

(Anonymous) 2025-03-30 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
As a kid, I used to think the Olsen twins were triplets, Mary, Kate, and Ashley. Just from reading the way it was in the credits during Full House.

There's a radio station I've been listening to ever since I was a baby that played one song that I never really bothered to look up, but didn't mind listening to it, called La Isla Bonita by Madonna.

1) For an embarrassing amount of years I thought the opening line went "Last night I dreamt of some bagels~"
Instead of "Last night I dreamt of San Pedro..."

2) As of 5 minutes ago I just found out that it was sung by Madonna, even though I thought it was sung by somebody else entirely.

This is a minor one but I thought duct tape was DUCK tape for so long and didn't understand what ducks had to do with fixing things but also shrugged it off and took it as one of those things. Once I saw it spelt I realised my goof.

I also used to think gammon was fish despite it very clearly not having a fish texture or look at all. Don't ask me why I thought that, I don't know.

when I was a youngun, all the way into my teens, I honestly thought that anything presented as non-fiction - particularly books - was automatically true. Since, yknow, teachers said fiction = untrue story, non-fiction = factual. No one ever said that anyone could publish any bullshit they wanted, so I took a lot of ghost and alien non-fiction as true for an entirely too-long timme.

Acid Rain and Quicksand. I grew up in an age of news and entertainment that told us both of these things would be a factor of adult life.

When I was young I used to think America and the UK were within walking distance. I believed we could just travel to Disneyland by car, so I was disappointed when I was told we couldn't go, and I was 100% convinced my sister would marry Prince William and I'd get with Prince Harry.

(ftr I'm Australian, and a lesbian now)

I grew up in a warm climate, so for the longest time I though winter was only December. Like, it only lasted one month. I only realized when I went to college and got confused that it wasn't warming up in January. I was a dumbass.

When I was very young, I thought that a skeleton key could open literally any door, that Roy G Biv was a person, that adults were stupid for the bunny-around-the-tree explanation for tying shoelaces (I figured out how to do the two loops together after much frustration with the other method and could not figure out why they would do it that way), and that coffee would just stop you from growing (to be fair, at the time, there was a belief that caffeine stunted growth in childhood).

Read any good fic lately?

(Anonymous) 2025-03-30 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like we've had book threads but not fic discussions recently. Read anything good? Any specific pairings/fandoms/tropes calling to you these days?

I sometimes wonder if the song "Me, You and Steve" is about a clueless dudebro who keeps thirdwheeling the dates of the narrator OR a clueless girl who doesn't get the hint that SHE is the one thirdwheeling a gay couple.

Water

Amd the difference between Spring, Distilled, and Purified and which water you are supposed to get for what.

I don't care enough to really look it up but on the rare occasion I have to buy water I am alsways slightly confised and curious.

has anyone actually kept an accurate record of how many voice roles Tress MacNeille has done since her debut in the 1980s? Not just her famous ones but every little one-season Hanna-Barbara show, every non-recurring one-shot, etc. I know I could look up her wikipedia but 1. I don't care that much and 2. I've looked up voice actors a lot and most of their wikis/imdbs are woefully bereft of half their credits. I don't trust wikis anymore.

Chelsea Handler's new special

I laughed my ass off.

She does drop "Martha's Vineyard" way too much, but the sex stuff was so relatable, lol.
