What bits of history are especially interesting to you? Events? Eras? Cultures? Anything. Just what do you find the most fascinating to learn about.

Black Death and the Industrial Revolution because they both entirely altered the course of Western history.

World War 2 and any history about medical breakthroughs.

WWI. Started with mounted cavalry, ended with tanks and machine guns and firebombing cities in the span of about 4 years.

Ancient Egypt mostly. WW2 somewhat, because I find it interesting but there are also too many parallels to today and it's depressing.

French - particularly Joan of Arc and Marie Antoinette - Scottish and Irish history and mythology. I pin it down to my ancestry.

Early humans are my jam.

Also the Incan empire.

right now I'm super fascinated by unrecorded history - the civilizations that definitely existed even before Sumeria, but because so much of it was likely built with impermanent materials, we have no records besides ethnolinguistic memory. Common myth origins, traceable language forms, and place-names of otherwise unknown kingdoms that later kingdoms heard of. I'm amazed by how far back human history actually goes, while also annoyed that for so long science basically treated anyone that didn't leave stone foundations and some form of writing as primitive cavemen. We probably had cities, kingdoms, languages, art, and culture going back to the end of the last ice age (10k-14k years ago) but will never have evidence because it was made of wood, plant fiber, and animal products that don't last like stone.

they know by the size of their brains and the shape of their jaw that Neanderthals had spoken language but of course nobody knows its vocabulary or what it sounded like. I've always wondered about that.

DA - that type of shit is fascinating to me. I love it.

exactly! it's sad that we can't just find an artifact that will recapture Neanderthal culture but I think we're doing better by rethinking the whole concept of what humanity is and has been.

I wonder if they will ever try to bring back early hominids like they are with extinct species if they ever have the means.

I have heard a speculation on Neanderthal vocalization and it was weirdly like a Pepperpot Lady.

Yeah, I live near a place in Australia that has stone buildings and aquaculture dating back at least 6,600 years, but the specific details of the settling of the area go back in detail to the last eruption of the volcano. And that was 36,000 years ago.

Super cool! Especially with final acknowledgment of sea levels and land bridges that make migration not just probable but likely.

I am mostly into early 20 century right now.
I have a actual degree in Heian Japan clothes lol

Anyway, I always sort of hated history at school before I've realised that you can learn about arts, crafts, language AND political shit as a background flavour. And not vice versa. I really do not care about monarchs and wars if it's not helping me right now.

(Anonymous) 2025-04-25 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
You can get a degree in that?

I find Heian Japan interesting (quite enjoyed "The World of the Shining Prince" even if it is somewhat out of date)... though it's not helping me get through The Tale of Genji any more easily.

Sort of, actually I have degree in design, but my graduate thesis (is this the right word combination? English isn't my first language) was about historical reconstruction and impact on modern design of Heian era clothing. Yes, being nerd is my lifestyle :D I've made some clothes too, with "plum flowers in bloom" color scheme and all.

I had fun with Tale of Genji, but it's... yeah. Product of its time
