Words you didn't realize are not "common"

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2025-06-14 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I just realize that most people don't use the term "verklempt" when talking about being emotional over something. I don't even know where I learned it from but I use it frequently.

Everyone I know (who isn't Jewish) learned it off a Mike Myers Saturday Night Live sketch called "Coffee Talk":

Oh, I guess it's not strictly a Yiddish word, just sort of similar to one?

Dang! I don't recall watching that as a kid but my parents might have. Thank you for the history.

I've had to explain teetotaler to the lady doing my mortgage paperwork and also to a former boss.

That is one of those words that feels like it should mean the opposite of what it does. To me it sounds like it's describing someone who is staggering drunk.

I used the word "sequel" when I was about ten years old and talking to my dad, and was surprised when he reacted with "Wow, that's a really advanced word for someone your age! Where did you learn it?" I still don't know if it really was considered that advanced for kids back then (I really doubt it would be now, in the age of everything having a sequel) or if my dad was the one who was out of the loop.

Sequel is a word I misspell incorrectly every time.

For me it's not a word, but a piece of punctuation: the em-dash. It's apparently obscure enough that people now think you aren't human if you use it.

Yeah, that is a weird one for me. it is something that my email program does automatically. Didn't realize it was an AI thing.

Re: Words you didn't realize are not "common"

(Anonymous) 2025-06-14 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think this is actually a paradox, because AI wouldn't have put in lots of em-dashes if it didn't train on them. I think the issue is that AI trained on scraped fanfics which have a LOT of em-dashes and it stands out to non-fic people.

Right? I'm baffled by how many people want so badly to be good at identifying AI written text that they'll just seize upon any "clue" and run with it no matter how nutty.

Dawdle. It's perfect for describing how young kids walk, and the parents had no idea what it meant.

Huh. I use that word but never would have thought to describe it that way or use it to describe walking. Interesting!

It really is perfect! The only word I think compares is meander and it doesn't have the same whimsy.

I'm Scottish, and Weegie Scottish at that.

First time I went South of the Rio Tweed, into the bandit country and uncivilised lands doon there, I learned about seventy percent of my daily spoken vocabulary was unheard of. The further south I went, the worse it got. They speak weird heathen gabble doon in El Kento, they really dae. Cannae maikit heid nor tail o' thur patter in thae pairts, ken.

Lol, I've had the same experience as someone from the Deep South. I didn't realize I still had a very noticeable accent until last weekend. Was playing Phasmo with a stranger and mentioned "Ah, I don't have an accent much since I've lived in Oklahoma for nearly ten years." And she immediately said, 'No. You have a very noticeable accent.' XD

A thread above kinda made me think of this: dude. Calling someone a dude is not gender specific for me and wasn’t for anyone I grew up with despite moving almost every year to a new state or country. But I’ve seen A LOT of responses like above where someone thinks it’s only used for men and have even been told to my face that it’s borderline hate speech.

Yeah, I call everyone dude (including my own sisters, lol). And yeah....I saw that thread. :/

'Dude' and 'guys' were not gendered in conversation when growing. "Hey guys" is a gender neutral way to address a group. But I do understand why people get annoyed and say it is gendered. Kind of like how I get annoyed with "mankind" instead of "humankind".

(Anonymous) 2025-06-14 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude is a weird one for me, in that I don't care if it's used to address a group but if someone were to address me individually using it, I'd probs think they were talking to someone else.

Re: Words you didn't realize are not "common"

(Anonymous) 2025-06-14 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't been accused of borderline hate speech (that's a fucking ridiculous accusation and whoever claimed that clearly doesn't know the definition), but whether or not it's gender-specific depended on context for me. "That dude over there" makes me think someone's talking about someone male. But simply going, "Dude!" or "Whoa, dude!" or "Dude, did you see that?" doesn't make me think of gender at all. Oddly, that's how I view "man" as well. "Maaaan..." or "thanks, man" is much different from saying "you're a man" or "that man over there." Maybe I hung around way too many hippies in my life, idk.

I'll admit I kind of miss the rare "dudette" they used to say back in the day.

My company has tried to get us to stop using it on the grounds of it being gendered and not inclusive. Like... dude.

Bureau. As in, a dresser or chest of drawers where you keep your clothes. I get called out on it being a weird word all the time, but it is just what we called that piece of furniture growing so idk.
