Pick up a pencil and learn to draw. It won't be good at first, but. You get there.

Ugh.

"Advice" like this feels so condescending and I question the sincerity of it. It's just as bad as the "Oh, no fanfic for pairings/tropes you like? Write your own!" comments.

It's the truth though, if you want something that doesn't exist then you either make it yourself or pay someone else to make it.

Except guess how most of us learned to draw or to write stories? Because we wanted something to exist in the world and it didn't, so we figured out how to do it ourselves! I couldn't draw humans in middle school, then in high school I got into anime and practiced until I could draw humans. The problem is people want the *perfect* thing to exist and can't accept that you have to start with the imperfect thing.

Except that knowing how to draw or write doesn't guarantee that you'll be able to fulfill your own desires for art. I've been writing for over two decades because I started when I was a little kid who loved stories and wanted more stories. It's not that easy to just write a story that I myself would love to read. It's not about perfection. It's that one of the best parts of consuming media is finding something new and delightful. Me doing everything from scratch doesn't leave much in the way of surprises or discoveries because I'm the author. That's why I still read and enjoy fiction written by other people.

I find the whole "just do it yourseeeeeeelf" thing really dismissive. Not everyone is capable of performing to the level they'd like to consume. Again, it's not about perfection. Even if I started learning how to draw, there's no guarantee I'd even reach mediocrity, never mind a high skill level. And not everyone wants to draw and/or write. Plenty of people just want to enjoy and read, and that's fine.

This. I love to write. I write all the time. But I also still read books and fanfic because sometimes I enjoy reading things that someone ELSE wrote.

It's not a problem of wanting to not do it yourself. But you aren't owed exactly what you want just because you want it. That's the problem. If you want something, but don't want to pay or make it yourself, you deal with what's available for free. But the problem with AI bros is they want exactly what they want for free all the time. They don't see artists as worth money. Because they want to consume consume consume, but ONLY EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT, ALL THE TIME. They don't WANT surprise. They want to enter "2b from nier automata in leotard looking out window at rain" and to have fifty different versions of it to fap to without paying for those fifty different versions because they see themselves as BETTER than artists who DARE charge them for labor.

I want to be a plumber, but I don't want to learn any of the skills to do it! It's condescending to say you should learn the skills! ...Why are all the pipes I worked on leaking?

Re: Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. It's more like "I want non-leaky pipes in my home and people keep telling me to just learn all the skills to be a plumber".

Re: Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, AI bro.

Re: Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
No, that analogy doesn't apply at all. OP didn't say they wanted to be an artist. I'm not sure if you're that bad at reading comprehension, or if this is one of those bad faith arguments that FS trolls love so much.

Re: Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they just want instant gratification and not to have to pay money for it. Like, you know, you would to get good, non-leaky pipes from a plumber.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who has been drawing for literally 40 years, shut up. I can't make perfect fanart for my own purposes, and I have decades under my belt. Most people can't. The barriers between wanting the art and having the art aren't that simple.

I still don't jive with OP's excuse for using AI but don't even pretend that everyone who wants custom art and can't pay for it can just pick up a pencil.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I've been drawing for decades and can't make perfect fanart either, but I'm getting better every time I draw and I can still make things that I like even if they aren't perfect. If you don't want to pay for it and don't want to learn how to do it then maybe you just have to deal with not having it, rather than turning to the theft machine.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
^ This.

How many of the nonnies giving that advice only consume the art and fic they themselves have created because they're so able to fulfill their own interests, I wonder?

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I write. I cannot write the things I want the most. So I continue to write and improve until I can. Like, that's how life works.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
That rather conspicuously dodges the question, which is an answer itself.

It's okay for people to want art and fic even if they lack the ability to create it themselves. It's okay for people to want art and fic and NOT want to create it themselves. It's truly bizarre to imply that people should HAVE to make things if they want to consume things, because that's not how life works.

My guess is you guys are mad at OP for using AI, but that's a separate issue.

Oh no, you don't have Louvre quality art! It isn't fucking perfect! BETTER MAKE A MACHINE DO IT SO I HAVE INSTANT GRATIFICATION BECAUSE I AM ENTITLED TO THE THING I WANT WHEN I WANT IT!!!!!!!

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
What an unhinged response to a reasonable comment.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not reasonable. People are just so fucking spoiled and want what THEY want exactly HOW they want it WHEN they want it, they can't stand that they can't have it so they run a plagiarism machine to get it and then whine when real artists shun them. Quit being spoiled brats and maybe you'll understand. You don't whine that your favorite restaurant doesn't give you free food all the time because you're a loyal customer and love their food. You pay for the labor. But for some reason, when artists want pay for fulfilling your desires, you pitch a fit like a toddler being told they can't have the shiny toy in the check-out aisle.

Agreed. Some people aren't physically capable of picking up a pencil.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you deal with what you CAN get for free or you pay the fuck up. You don't run Plagiarism Machine 5000 for Instant Gratification Fuck The Costs.

I totally agree with that. I was merely pointing out not everyone is physically capable of drawing.

Too disabled to pick up a pencil but somehow able to type keywords in the generators?

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I've seen at least two artists that draw and paint with their feet. Either do the work yourself or hire someone. You don't get to steal other people's work because you don't want to figure out how to do it yourself.
