I'd likely be more for AI if it were heavily regulated. And if there were steep punishments for people who steal art/writing/etc to "train" their models. And punishments for those who don't clearly label their AI ragebait.

But really, "I dun wunna give up x thing because cheap/convenient" is infuriating to hear when the world is burning around you and you are knowingly contributing to it, and not out of necessity.

Artificial Imagery is heavily polluting and you need to guesswork the damned thing over just doing shit yourself, but as an artist, I'd very much agree if it was heavily regulated and its training data was entirely voluntary. Or if copyright law was reformed into something more logical and practical for the common artist.

Seriously. It's so frustrating.

And even in the case of "commissions are too expensive"... What artists are you following? I've gotten lovely art for $15-30.

You know if you make friends with artists and talk to them about their work and encourage them you can also see fanart for free, without being a complete douchebag about it. The amount of fanart I've seen/received for my rarest pairs just by hanging out with other artists and becoming a friend they're excited to show things to and make things for is pretty high. Hell, I've had an incredible artist draw OC content for me just because we chat a lot about the things we love. Not being able to afford even cheap commissions is NOT a compelling excuse.

This too!

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
your suggestion is to befriend people so you can mooch off them for their art?

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Genuinely curious, where do you find these artists who will draw you stuff for free? I'm friends with a lot of artists and they may give discounts to friends, but they won't just give you free art. Which is completely fair! I would never ask any of my artist friends for a free picture.

Pick up a pencil and learn to draw. It won't be good at first, but. You get there.

Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-14 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Advice" like this feels so condescending and I question the sincerity of it. It's just as bad as the "Oh, no fanfic for pairings/tropes you like? Write your own!" comments.

As someone who has been drawing for literally 40 years, shut up. I can't make perfect fanart for my own purposes, and I have decades under my belt. Most people can't. The barriers between wanting the art and having the art aren't that simple.

I still don't jive with OP's excuse for using AI but don't even pretend that everyone who wants custom art and can't pay for it can just pick up a pencil.

I get you, OP. I haven't tried out any of the AI...programs? algorithms? entities? yet, but I've been thinking about familiarizing myself.

This is not a genie we can put back in the box, so as far as I'm concerned, at this point it's all about how each person chooses to use AI and not whether they use it or don't.

BTW, is there a particular AI you favor for generative fanart? Asking for myself.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-14 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Generative AI scrapes and steals from art made by actual humans, without their consent. I really don't understand this argument of "it's about how the person uses it." Nevermind the atrocious environmental impact.

Please do yourself a favour and leave it alone.

Someones shitty stickfigures are worth far more than AI slop generations. Just draw. It doesn't matter how it looks as long as its yours.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
This is such a deranged take. I don't aspire to create my own visual art. That is not a desire I harbor. It's not a goal, it's not a wish. What I want is horny images of my OTP. I don't care one iota if I made the images. I care that they look sufficiently like horny images of my OTP.

Great use of a secret, because this is a horrible position and if you were my friend in real life I'd drop you.

God, I feel this. I haven't dropped my old friends who use AI, but our vibes just don't match that much any more. The worst thing is that they were once artists, when we were all teenagers (I met one on then on DA in the late 2000s), then they dropped the hobby due to ??? idk time constriction and gaming addiction, I think (gaming is their main hobby and they game at least 4 hours a day).
When I try to talk about them about how gen AI is shit they just don't get it nor care to get it. It's like... they don't care AT ALL about artists and the art process and me, still an amateur artist I'm left like ._____. BRO then why are we even friends again???

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
No joke

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Not once have I looked at AI farts made for my fandom and thought they resembled the characters well. It only looks decent if it's the style everything is trained off of and even then there's bound to be more flaws to make it glaringly OOC than not.

Isn't most "worthwhile" AIs need to be paid to use?

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
FWIW OP I get where you are coming from and I share the sentiment. The problem is that everything else aside, AI images just look like shit. I remember that for a while the ghostbusters tag on tumblr was inundated with AI art and while it did look like the actors, that was the only thing it had going for it. All the details were wrong, the perspectives looked like ass, the colors were shit. If you're in a comic book or cartoon/anime fandom then I get it, it's easier to generate images when you're just trying to do simple shapes. But AI images always look like garbage, I have never seen any AI art that is actually decent. What I'm getting at here is that you deserve better than shitty AI. And if you don't have money to get commissions then you only have one path that is actually rewarding and will get you what you want at a low cost.

What this technology is doing is sifting the "haves" from the "have nots" in this case it is sifting the people who are willing to work hard to learn how to draw and make fanart vs the people who are not willing to work hard to learn how to draw. I know how much it sucks but at this rate you will be better off being one of the "haves" and start the artistic journey.

This is literally fine actually. RUNNING an AI model isn't any worse for the environment than like, streaming video. The environmental issues are from companies using big data centers to TRAIN big new models nonstop. It also has no effect on anyone's livelihood for you to make some pictures if you wouldn't be commissioning an artist anyway. Hope you have fun with it and don't feel unnecessary guilt.

but I can afford it

FOR NOW you can afford it.

Like, plenty has already been said in the comments that don't need reiterating. I just feel like I should add this, though.

You can afford it FOR NOW because this is the toxic business model plenty of company use: Provide services for free or at an extremely low cost at a loss for the company to get a foot in the door, get people hooked on the service/become the market standard, then jack up the prices.

Keep this in mind, OP.
