What have you memorized? (Fandom-related or otherwise)

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2025-07-02 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there things you’ve made a point of memorizing?

Are there things you realized you’ve memorized without trying?

(Songs, poems, quotes, lines of dialogue, whatever.)

I memorized It's The End of The World by REM, We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel, and Hook by Blues Traveler as a kid because I thought it was a neat party trick.

I am pretty sure I can name all of the original 150 Pokemon.

Lots of songs unintentionally.

I can't do it in order past the first 9, but I can for sure name all 150.

I had a couple songs I learned because they had lots of fast lyrics and I thought it would be nifty. I think I still remember all of Bad Day by REM and Subterranean Homesick Blues by Bob Dylan.

when I was a little kid I memorized Jabberwocky after one try.

Nice! I always found it much harder to memorize things in other languages and I wonder if Jabberwocky would be the same or if that kind of nonsense words would be different.

I watched Shrek and The Nightmare Before Christmas so much as a kid that I can recite both movies from beginning to end.

Impressive. There are films I’ve watched dozens of times and I still couldn’t necessarily remember the exact sequence of scenes, nevermind all the lines of dialogue.

I have the dumbest stuff memorized but it's never on purpose. Like old 80s theme songs or commercials. Pointless.

I used to have Hamlet's To Be or Not To Be soliloquy memorized, but alas most of it is gone now. I had a lot of poems memorized at some point, but they are nearly all gone now too. My memory has gone to shit in the past few years. It's to the point that I'm convinced something is wrong with my brain, but so far tests all come back clear.

Speaking of nonsense, I still remember the jingle from some channel’s end of year wrap-up in the early 2000s.

At the same time, I’ve also lost a lot of the poetry I used to know. I think songs are easier. Even when it rhymes, poetry doesn’t have the reinforcement of a tune behind it.

The inscription on the ring both in english and black speech.

The whole of Bilbo's poem about Aragorn.

All the dragons of Middle-Earth.

The Green Lantern vow.

And so many songs I love. Most of me doing this is just for sheer enjoyment and no other reason.

Damn, I always think memorizing things in a language you don’t speak is much harder.

And I do find the enjoyment makes such a difference. I still remember lots of things I memorized off my own bat, but very little of what I had to memorize for school.

Wait, you have the entire movies of Brave and How to Train Your Dragon memorized? Like line for line? That's wild.

I've watched Brave at least 50 times and HTTYD the same amount. I can quote the iconic lines anyway.

"Excuse me, barmaid! I'm afraid you brought me the wrong offspring! I ordered an extra-large boy with beefy arms, extra guts and glory on the side. This here, this is a talking fish-bone!"

I wasn't doubting you, I was just impressed! My brain does not work that way. I could watch a thing back to back a hundred times and I wouldn't have it memorized.

I memorized Edward Gorey’s Gashlycrumb Tinies when I was in my early teens. I used to recite it to myself when I got bored and I can still do it.

A is for Amy who fell down the stairs
B is for Basil, assaulted by bears
C is for Clara who wasted away
D is for Desmond who fell out of a sleigh

W is for Winnie, embedded in ice
X is for Xerxes devoured by mice
Y is for Yorick whose head was knocked in
Z is for Zillah who drank too much gin

I had a phase of absolutely loving that song, but I haven’t heard it in years.

I’ll have to put it on later and see how many of the lyrics I still remember.

I could definitely recite the whole of A Nightmare Before Christmas if pressed. I had that VHS on repeat all day as a kiddywink.

Slightly less cheerful, but the poem from the end of the song 'Shorley Wall' by Ooberman will forever be stuck in my brain. It was one of my late Dad's favourites and was always guaranteed to make us both cry.

*exaggerated inhale*

HE'S A PEDANTIC, PONTIFICATING, PRETENTIOUS BASTARD!

A BELLIGERENT OLD FART!

A WORTHLESS STEAMING PILE OF COW DUNG! ........... figuratively speaking.

(I watched Liar Liar on VHS almost every day after school for many months... lol)

I have probably half of the script memorized for "Hot Fuzz". For a while, I watched that film every day.

I can recite all the lyrics to all the big hit songs the Backstreet Boys released.
There are a lot of random songs where I have the lyrics memorized but my strongest confidence is with BSB singles lol

More songs than I can ever begin to list, a handful of poems (mostly of the short and humorous variety), a few sections of plays I've done that I haven't lost over the years, and a hell of a lot of lines of dialogue from things I've watched often enough. There are probably a couple movies I could quote along beat for beat-- RHPS, at any rate. I even have an old radio ad for that one memorized.

For some reson I can still recite the Robert Frost poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening if needed. I memorized it for english class when I was 14, and it stayed with me.
