How often do you read fanfiction?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-02 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
(If you are someone who reads fic.) Obviously inspired by secret #1.

I go through periods where I read fic multiple times a day and usually devour fic (or if I'm lucky, one long juicy fic) as my evening activity. Then I'll OD on it and go months not reading any, then eventually circle back to it. I've been repeating this cycle for years.

About an hour every day. Maybe two on weekends but I am double screening it 99% of the time.

Do you mean you are reading while also doing something else at the same time?

Yeah, I usually read while watching a movie or on youtube.

if there is one thing that is impossible fro me to do is reading a story and watching a movie/youtube video. Like, how do you see it unfolding into your mind? Or do you not see pictures while you read? I get reading comments/forums posts and while watching TV, but reading fiction and watching movies at the same time? How do you reconcile those different images?
Also, is it fun? You are like half watching sometimes potentially entertaining while half reading a story. Does it not ruin both those experiences at the same time?
Not judging here. I'm really curious. Do you prefer multitasking like this or watching/reading one thing at the time?

I have a friend that does this all the time and I am as baffled as you. If I'm reading I am concentrating so much and there is just no room for anything else. I guess if you took breaks and looked at the movie/other thing in between? But that would ruin the flow for me.

And if I'm doing something while watching a show/movie then I always end up having to rewind because I miss stuff become I got engrossed in the other thing. The only multitasking I can do is audiobooks/podcasts and something like crocheting or driving.

I think I'm one of those people who don't see pictures when they try to imagine something. If you tell me to think of a pink bear, I don't actually see it in my brain.

I only second screen when it "less important" stuff. So, fanfiction and a Let's Play. Or a comedy show or reruns. Or a casual video game and a youtube video. Whatever I'm watching is more in the background so I sometimes miss stuff. That is why I don't do that when watching something serious. Sometimes I'll stop reading for a bit if something big happens.

I find it fun and don't feel like anything is being ruined. I'd be incredibly bored if I could only do one. I love multitasking with casual stuff and single tasking with serious stuff. I don't second screen when reading original books that I actually want to remember.

Not Kaijin, but I pretty much need background noise to focus, so it’s not uncommon for me to put something on the TV and then do something else(read, cook, clean, etc)while that’s on and a sometimes half pay attention to it or I don’t and it’s just white noise for my brain. If I don’t I’ll get distracted by anything and everything and not actually do what I planned to. I don’t tend to put on anything I actually want to watch properly, it’s usually an old fave movie or something.

For me at least it’s a symptom of my ADHD and my brain needing a baseline level of stimulation so it doesn’t get locked off course.

Yeah, I NEED background noise. When I'm reading a book, I have a movie score on. And even when working, I always have at least one ear bud to listen to music or podcasts.

I see people saying this a lot and it always strikes me as funny, because my ADHD is the exact opposite. I cannot function with too many sources of stimulation going. I'll admit, sometimes I definitely enjoy having multiple things on but the end result is I don't actually take in any of them. If I actually want to read or focus, I just can't with multiple sources.

(Funny like, haha we all have the same diagnosis but that could mean wildly different things isn't the world weird. Not funny like making fun of something or disbelieving.)

I use to be quite regular and read something every night until about a month ago.
Not really for a particular reason. My main fandom has slowed down, but I had recently gotten into another fandom that I have been working my way through all the new and older works - but then I just stopped reading.

I did read a few fics earlier today after watching the Mario Brothers movies lol.

I usually look through the tags I have bookmarked in the evening a few hours before bed, but I also make sure to cut myself off by a certain time so I don't ruin my sleep patter, I set an alarm on my phone that buzzes and no matter where I am in the fic I close it and come back to it the next day.

Secret #1 OP and a bare minimum of 30 minutes a day, but sometimes up to 8-10 hours a day in the weekends. I think my medium is 2-3 hours, but it really depends on if I'm also reading original books.
I usually read on my kindle while on my bed before sleeping.

Daily, though not always for a long time. During the week I read on my bus to and from work, so that's about 25 min each way. Sometimes I read more in the evening, sometimes I don't. During the weekend I usually spend an hour or two reading fic. Now and then I get gripped by one and spend the whole day reading but, hey, I live alone with my cat, so it's not the end of the world if I do.

Everyday, whether on my commute to work or before going to sleep. I have so many fandictions opened right now my phone has (xxx) amount of tabs inactive cause of it 🙃 😅

Every evening. I used to read it commuting but now I live somewhere with no public transport so I have to drive!

Not daily but certainly weekly. I read less fic now compared to the 2000s/2010s because I have more ways to access published books (Overdrive, Gutenberg, archive.org).

Probably once or twice a week I'll spend a stretch of a few hours reading fic. Very occasionally I'll run across one that I can't put down, just like with a good novel.

If my husband is watching sports, I tune that out and read.

He is currently watching some Spanish crime drama I'm not interested in, so I do my internet time during stuff like that.

I can't double-screen if it's something I'm actually interested in watching, though. But I can tune out things with subtitles like that, or sports.

Aside from eating and sleeping, it's my favorite thing to do. I'm only limited by how much fic there is and how often it updates.

Sometimes every day. Mostly because I run a lot of reports at work, and I can sneak in a chapter while they're compiling. Sometimes I play a shit ton of sudoku instead.

Pretty much every day. Gives me something to do at work (I work overnight shifts where my prescribed 'duties' take about an hour to complete, and the rest of the time is them sleeping and me generally not), and is just a nice way to pass the time when no movie or tv show is interesting me at the moment.

Re: How often do you read fanfiction?

I would like to read more because my brain wants easy stimulation too. But I am always in small to smallish fandoms. And I rarely see fics that do not annoy the hell out of me. I tried reading for bigger fandoms, but nope, knowing canon rarely cut it. I want fics for something I am obsessing about.

Re: How often do you read fanfiction?

Daily. I read fast, so I read a lot. A 50k fic is a day’s read, so I vary between a bunch of short fics or a long read. It depends on how much work Ihave todo during the day, of course.

Lately, I only read fics when I come across something that makes me wonder if there's fic for it. And if I do find fics, that interest only lasts for a couple days to a couple weeks.

I recently looked up fanfics for "The Bear" because the fourth season just came out.
