I started playing it with some friends back when they first came out with the open beta like 2-ish years ago (maybe 3?). We played obsessively for about a week, and then got bored/ran out of content. It was understandable because it was a new game in beta, and we all thought they'd add more content in the future and it would be pretty fun. This was supposed to be this great cozy game, a cozy MMO, etc. Well, as is typical of cozy games, the community is surprisingly toxic. But the main thing I hate about it is how damn grindy it is. They release like limited edition collectable plushies you can get for your house, and you have to spend hours grinding away at killing animals or collecting bugs or whatever. To me that is the lowest form of gameplay content, where you're just repetitively doing the same mindless activity over and over and over. I just find it disappointing because I really had high hopes for this game, and it's flopped pretty hard. They also cut their dev team a lot so I only see it getting worse, not better.

Also, the prices for the cosmetic items are off-the-wall insane. Like $50 for a fucking outfit. If it were even $20 I might have considered it to support the game (it is free to play) but I can't get past the crazypants prices.

Ahaha, I do remember that. One of the reasons I stopped playing. Not the main reason, but definitely one of them.

I kinda think the devs have given themselves an impossible mission here; a free-to-play MMO with no pay-to-win elements is... donations and cosmetics are all that's left at that point. They gotta pay the server bills, and that means they have to entice X amount of money out of the players.

A certain free-to-play browser game I used to play has a mode that locks out your inventory for a run, and that used to apply to most microtransaction items, but people consistently bought less of the ones that couldn't be taken into that mode, so now they're nearly always exceptions. I think the game was better when they weren't, but the devs gotta pay the bills, and that's how the financial incentives aligned.

People just don't often buy in-game items that are Only Fun and not Beneficial. I don't think there's any possible price on cosmetics that'll keep Palia afloat.
