Fandom trends you wish you were never part of

(Anonymous) 2025-07-25 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
The other day there was a thread for fandoms you wish you weren't in or could forget. How about trends or fads you took part in that you wish you hadn't?

For me, it was soulbonds. I'm embarrassed by the whole thing and am glad those forums no longer exist and cannot be traced to me in any way.

Ship wars.

I was young when I engaged in it but I still wish I hadn't let myself get caught up in something so stupid. I never got to the point of actually harassing other fans, but even joining in the mean-spirited dunking was something I'm embarrassed about to this day. I'm just glad that fandom footprint of mine is buried.

Ship wars from back in the day. Ugh. Really wish I'd never been anywhere near that.

very classic h/c angst fic

One the one hand, it is popular and classic for a reason and I was a teenager (unknowingly at the time) projecting and working through my issues through writing fic, so it is what it is. Nothing inherently wrong with that.

On the other hand, my god was it awful writing and full of such OOC clichés. I'm embarrassed I was such a stereotype (but hey, no Mary Sues at least?). It is still out there on ff.net because I lost the sign in info and so it just...exists..in all its glory on that trash site.

Those Livejournal communities dedicated to finding Mary Sue fics and mocking them. I was a member of one for a handful of fandoms, and the moderator of one for another. Even though we had it in the rules to keep the mocking among ourselves and not bother the authors, it was still bullying. I was in high school and college. I don't know how I thought that was okay.

I never took part in those, but I remember reading those and agreeing.

There's a subreddit for my fandom and new fans come in there all the time with "I have an idea for a fanfic (insert Mary Sue OC plot)!" and I just...click away, shaking my head, because I'm not going to yuck someone's joy, but it's so cringe. I'm not sure if the existence of these comms back in the day kept some people from writing shitty fic or it's just a rite of passage.

EH discovering those communities kept me from sharing my fanfictions for over 20 years now for fear of being mocked (I got severely bullied IRL when I was in school. I don't need that energy in fandom, too) so I guess it kept at least some people to participate in fandom. :/

Songfics.
Also almost fell victim to the "gratuitous fangirl Japanese in fic" thing but fortunately was never active enough in fandoms where the canon was set in Japan to be a really bad case.

MST3K style commentary for bad fanfic. It was truly shitty fic by someone I had some other issues with but I guess it was kinda mean. Deserved, though.
