Character types you hate

Are there any character types that really don't work for you?

Personally, anti-heroes generally don't work for me, especially male ones. There are a few that I like, but generally just not my thing.

Also generally bullies, whether kids or adults (but especially adults), are an instant dislike. Especially if we're later supposed to sympathize with them.

Unearned redemption. I love a good redemption arc. But if a character goes suddenly from bad to good and everyone buys it and no one is still upset for the bad stuff, I'm out. And especially if the character jumps back and forth over the line repeatedly.

The smarmy, joke character. Like Tony Stark.

And the all knowing female character. But that is a fanfic exclusive character type.

Emotional characters that get themselves and others into trouble because they can't handle their emotions and overwhelming urge to create drama. Double so if they don't think they did anything wrong. Triple so if the author/plot treats it like they did nothing wrong. Fictional men who can't control their anger count under this umbrella and there are so goddamn many of them because too many male authors for some reason don't think flailing about angrily counts as being emotional, when it totally does.

On the flip side, if a character is shown dealing with extreme emotions and refusing to let it get themselves or others into trouble or let it affect their outward behavior, I like them better for it.

Characters whose purpose is to die, and the writers want you to care about their death so they try extremely hard to make them lovable. There are two main ways they seem to do this: 1. The character is a complete all-around good person with a positive attitude and innocent love of helping others. 2. The character is a total badass who also has a positive attitude but in a more aggressive manner than 1 and is super confident and makes rousing speeches to motivate other characters.

I don't hate the attempt at this kind of character, I appreciate it more than not even trying to give characterization to a character because they're just going to die soon. They just don't work for me because they rarely have any real flaws. (In fact, even if they don't die, extremely badass characters don't work for me even with flaws unless they also have a dorky/loser side.) I hate them because they always have a loud group of fans who keep asking why they had to die and being mad that they did, and don't understand that their death was the entire point. They are lovable (to you) plot devices.

A few examples I can give that are probably too well-known to be spoilers are Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist and Kamina from Gurren Lagann. Shonen anime LOVES this trope.

Most "bad boy" types, especially if they have an alpha male lean. Ugh, insufferable IRL, and I don't want it in my fiction.

The supposed moral-center/good-guy protagonist who is actually just really self-absorbed. Though the show narrative keeps telling you they are righteous, their shown actions are often not great and somewhat damaging to the people around them and are sometimes pretty despicable and kind of devastating, even if the show writers don't seem to realize the implications. See Dawson Leery, Ross Gellar, Ted Mosby, Scott McCall, Meredith Grey, etc.

Sometimes they don't start out that way and grow into it, sometimes it's lurking there in the background from the start but it takes a while to realize it, and sometimes it just seems like fairly normal bouts of self-interest up until it hits some saturation point. I really don't like it when it becomes clear in retrospect.

Vent thread

[personal profile] philstar22 2025-07-28 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Not work related, I promise.

Was supposed to have the first part of my first nerve block this morning. Only somehow no one told me it was at a different location. So I waited an hour outside because they don't actually open until 8 (procedure scheduled for 7). And they only have an answering service on the phone after hours, and all their facilities use the same phone number.

So I didn't have the procedure done today, had to reschedule. Really frustrated and still in a lot of pain.

I'm sorry, that sounds so frustrating.
I just now found out my apt is one of the ones that is going to have the power cut for 12 hours next week so they can make adjustments to the solar paneling. Not surprised they picked me because the bldg managers play favorites and I'm not one of the favorites due to my choosing not to poop out kids. The real problem is I'm supposed to be baking brownies that particular day and I can't very well do that with no oven.

Oh it's nice to know FS is still here. If I can figure out my pw (I was a regular for years) I'll look in again!

What's for dinner?

We experimented making a shepherd pie and it wasn't great. We needed more mashed potatoes.

Sandwich with turkey, pickle, onion slices, and cilantro. Chips and bean salad on the side. And some honeydew melon for dessert.

For lunch I had leftover pasta with veggies. I guess I switched lunch and dinner today.

Grilled mushrooms, squash, and a spinach and strawberry salad. We got super lucky today and had a lot of cloud cover so it was cool enough to be outside to use the grill.

Baked chicken drumsticks that had been marinated in bbq sauce (nothing fancy, just bottled) and baked with lots of sliced onions, cornbread, and salad.

Spaghetti with white clam sauce, and sliced tomatoes.

Salmon and steamed broccoli.

Tomorrow is kielbasa (my favorite!) and green bean casserole. I lazily bought a frozen green bean casserole, so we'll see how that is.

My best friend and I went out for Chinese food, we had hot and sour soup, pot stickers, beef chow mein, mixed fried seafood w/hot sauce, spring rolls and rice. Yummy!
