They're doing it wrong!

(Anonymous) 2025-08-16 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Based on #4. For the most part I don't think anyone really expects media to portray things as historically or factually accurate 100% of the time, but I also think we all have those niche topics that we just can't bend about and get all upset when they don't do things "properly" - what is yours?

Being a veteran, when they screw up military uniforms and ranks and hair regulations. If you don’t have an advisor on call, google it!

It used to be that they were only allowed to show accurate historical uniforms but I’m not sure if that’s still the case.

I used to get really annoyed when shows like Bones fucked up their anthropology and forensics, but it's been long enough that I've worked in that field that I'm a little more laid back about it these days.

oh it's always the costumes for me, but I enjoy picking apart the inaccuracies, it's hilarious. most of the time I just want to sort out why a costume designer or art director made the choices, I only get really annoyed if the answer was clearly "bc audience dumb only like hot people being hot." fuck you, a gorgeously embroidered outfit showing zero skin is still hot.

Saaaaaaame, nonny, same. I know sometimes movies or TV shows make aesthetic choices over historical accuracy, but it's possible to take that too far. And I think people don't always try hard enough with costuming and it ends up looking ill-fitting, cheap, the wrong fabric, etc.

I played the violin for many years, and it bugs me when TV or movies have someone faking it badly... like the bow and fingers aren't even moving in time to the notes.

I played a wind instrument for years. Not matching the fingers moving to the change in notes drives me NUTS. The fingers will be moving over the holes like mad for an even tone. NO! BAD!

I don't play anything, but my understanding is that sometimes (often?) the mismatch between the motions of the actor and the music they're meant to be playing is a sound design/directing issue, where the actor learned the correct motions for one specific measure for a close-up and then someone decides they'd rather use a different part of the same piece, or a different one altogether, but keeps the same footage.

Of course it's still annoying when no-one even tries, though.

Honestly I tend to mostly get annoyed at OOC. So new takes on a character that feel really off. My major issue with the Snyder version of Superman for example.

I can forgive most things, so long as it would either be too expensive/too much work to get it right for what they were doing, they needed it to be a little off for the point they're making, it makes it more available to modern audiences, etc etc. What I can't forgive is forgetting their own shit mid-media. If you tell me something about the world in the beginning of whatever it is, book, movie, tv show, game, and then forget it and violate it later and hand waive it or never address it? You suck at it.

Yes! I'm much more interested in internal consistency over historical accuracy.

Look, I can forgive many things about Middle Ages and/or Tudor costuming if it's a rough approximation, but headdresses that are essentially hairbands are one of my triggers.

Why is hair and makeup so often so wrong even in things that get the clothes mostly right?

I can't think of any I have personally (although living in Minnesota and having grown up in IL/IA, I'm always on the lookout for mountains and palm trees that Should Not Be There in movies/shows set in the Midwest), but I just reblogged a Tumblr post I thought was funny that compiled people complaining about their peeves: https://hypokeimena.tumblr.com/post/735436034015477760/my-people-have-found-me

Let birds of prey sound like squeaky toys! Unless they're red tailed hawks that all the rest get dubbed with. Idk if I've ever heard another species of owl get dubbed over with great horned owl calls, but I wouldn't be surprised. Barn owls sound like someone screaming.

Food that has no business existing in the historical setting of choice. So, early medieval Europe settings with tomatoes and pumpkins and the likes.

And potatoes. And, in Britain, root cellars.

it's me. i'm the friend pointing out every single red-tailed hawk sound that gets passed off as an eagle.
