Tbh, especially on Angel, I liked the other writers WAYYYYY better than him. 'A Hole in the World's dialogue still makes me twitch.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, me too. And "Waiting in the Wings" was a bad remake of "Tabula Rasa".

Angel was never Joss' baby, though. It was DeKnight and Greenwalt's. They took better care of it.

I agree that Joss Whedon has a system. You know going in that you're not going to get happy fun times at all. So for that I don't think he's as brilliant as so many think he is but he knows what he's doing and knows how to work it.

[identity profile] alenxa.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've gathered, the Joss = God folks like it that way. To each their own.

[identity profile] wanttobeatree.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I... think everyone on the internet has cottoned on to this already, but thanks anyway?

YES.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure you are missing a lot of what's going on if you think that his stuff is just a single trick. But I respect that you've gotten tired of his style of story telling. That happens. Not everything is universally appealing. I don't watch sitcoms anymore because I find them boring and repetitive and most of the humor lame, but I'm not surprised that they are popular, because, hey, everyone isn't me.

I don't think he's God, but I don't think he's a one-trick pony either. He's got some things he likes, but what author doesn't? Yeah, I'm still mad that he killed Wash basically because he couldn't think of anything better to do, among others, but I think most of the time, the rest of the show, whatever it be, is worth the WTF moments.

I agree that his plots are pretty much always the same story but that's not what Joss fans like about him. It's not about the story, not really. He's really good at characterization. Yes, he does have some of the same characters in each show but somehow the fans always care about them. The fact that he can use the same characters and still make so many care if bad things happen to them, THAT'S what makes him a good writer.

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I will be the first to admit that Joss's system isn't perfect (and this is coming from a fan). Actually one of the things he's most criticized about is his refusal to let two characters be happy (except Willow and Kennedy ugh). So it's not just you.

But on the other hand, no one really watches Joss shows for story. It's all about the character development and dialougue baby. Unless the plot is really nauseating (Angel season 4, and Buffy seasons 6 and 7, I'm looking at you), you can usually just ignore the plot. The shows are fun overall.

Agreed!

While he does recycle some things, yes, I wouldn't say he's just one trick. Like someone else said, I enjoy the characterization and other little things he does. But I don't really lose sleep over the fact that others don't enjoy his shows as much as I do anyway..

Life involves pain, death, and challenges on a near-daily basis. I liked that his characters weren't spared just because we liked them.

I don't really see how that's his "only trick," somehow. Yes, half the cast will die horribly. I go into Joss Whedon stuff, when I do go into it, realizing this. But the entire show isn't about "oh look these people are going to die horribly." There's other stuff going on; how it gets there and the other things that are happening is what holds my interest. You could call it a gimmick, though I think it's just what he likes doing with his stories, but it certainly isn't the plot or the point of the shows.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
He needs to kill more people in Dollhouse.

And by more, I mean everyone but Topher and DeWitt.

My issues with Joss aren't so much with storyline (and really, if you think the storyline boils down to who does and does not die, I think you're kind of missing the point) but it's with the dialogue. So many of his characters have essentially the same voice.

And I LIKE that voice and I will stop every time and watch a Firefly, Angel -- and usually even Buffy -- episode if I stumble across it, but after all that, but he's quickly ceasing to be someone I do appointment-viewing for -- or even someone I'm compelled to stick around for on faith if something's just not grabbing me (*cough*Dollhouse*cough*).

And OT a little, but I feel the same way about Aaron Sorkin. A Few Good Men, Sports Night and The West Wing? Love them, will watch them whenever. Studio 60? Nah.
