TBH this dude’s energy is just a leetle too cheery for me, but then I’m not the target audience. I think we need this show in these dark times, though I’m sure it’ll look way too “woke” to parents whose kids need it the most. So I wish the show best of luck in their endeavour and I hope it’s a beautiful part of the young generation’s childhood like it was for me.

I suppose it’s too much to hope for that they keep the same theme song, though? I love that song, it makes my heart feel lighter.

this hadn't crossed my mind until i read this secret. possibly unpopular opinion: now i hope they actually don't make the show overtly "woke" so that the anti-woke parents will be less likely to prevent their kids from watching it. make it subtly woke so that it goes under the radar, and maybe those kids who, like you said, need to see it the most will be allowed to

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that's possible. For many MAGA asshats, "woke" means any attempt at diversity or representation. The fact that the host is black and that there are brown people in the show, plus brown children? Raise the alarm, it's one of those woke liberal shows!

Unfortunately it's probably already "too woke" because of the host. They'd quite honestly find the original show too "woke" as well.

Ee-yep.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-04 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, unfortunately.

I was a babysitter in the 80s & 90s and had some families who banned the original because LeVar Burton is black.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-04 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've known families like that. Best friend's aunts would change the channel if they saw a black person on TV. The existence of brown people is enough for some to take offense.

I've always felt vaguely guilty about finding this guy annoying. He is doing good work and I applaud it, but I cannot personally stand to listen to him. I think kids vibe with him though, and that's all that really matters.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-04 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Part of it might just be my personal bias because I love/loved LeVar Burton so very much that I would never like another host as much as him.

The theme song has actually had a few changes, but mostly just tune and performer. I think the lyrics have stayed mostly the same. I can't imagine them changing the lyrics that much for the new show, it seems like a big part of the whole brand.

Don’t know that guy but he looks an awful lot like the viral librarian who quit. That him?

(Anonymous) 2025-10-04 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It is!

(Anonymous) 2025-10-04 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ayrt - omg that's cute that's what he is doing :) thanks for letting me know!

Oh, why did he quit?

I get a lot of early childhood education type accounts recced to me and his popped up a lot, but I never kept up with him. Was there drama?

(Anonymous) 2025-10-05 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Ayrt - it was a video that got viral but I don't recall the details, just a guy who was a very passionate librarian in the US was quitting because the "anti-woke" freaks couldn't appreciate his work and I remember thinking ugh this is why the world is going downhill. Not sure if he said he was autistic and that was the reason, or something. Which is a stupid reason, incidentally.

So I looked him up. He said he quit due to a mental health crisis and so he could focus on his mental health. I don't want to concern troll him but I hope he is taking care of himself and that the reading rainbow gig doesn't cause him more anxiety. He seems like a really genuinely nice person.

Mental health crisis is true. I'm a librarian and closer to the source than some in this community. Mychal posted allusions to considering suicide and how he'd gotten over the anniversary of when he wouldn't be here anymore.

I'm happy for him and hope the show does well.

They made a reboot of this? srsly?
