Secrets you don't want to make...

(Anonymous) 2025-10-10 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and while I'm definitely not the world's greatest expert at secret design, I'll try my best. Please note that long comment secrets can be difficult to make with a good end result. Most of the time, I'll give it a shot but might not be able to make secrets where the text is so lengthy that I can't fit it into the limited space.

I'm trying something new with the comment secret thread and extending the deadline to comment until Sunday's post goes up. I'll monitor this thread until then, and hope the extra day will be more helpful for everyone.

Cheers,

a secret maker

P.S. Please don't worry if you've submitted a secret and it hasn't been posted yet. I usually post these threads before running out of the previous batch of secrets to get a head start on the next batch.

I liked Lord Boreal better in the books.

S!B he's obviously attracted to Lyra, but it added so much to his creep factor and the feeling of her being in peril.

Ariyon Bakare is very good. But his Boreal is just a different character.

My fandom used to have so many long one-shots and multi-chapter fic. Now there are mostly (very) short fics and chapters. They're still good, for the most part, but I often find myself missing the long, meaty fanfic.

I've tried being the change. I'm only one person, though.

An acquaintance I follow on insta keeps reposting those radfem reels in her stories that are often really close to all-out misandry. While the other half of what she reposts are all cringy obsessive thirst memes about male celebrities (mainly K-pop) and characters and for the latter especially the canonically abusive shadow daddy types (and similar).
And sure, you can absolutely like something in fiction that you don't condone irl but honestly, hardcore simping for and romanticising traits and people you spend a long time condemning is a bit like an outspoken vegan stanning a steakhouse.

Whenever an influencer does this damned tappy-tap-tap with their shitty fake nails on any product they pick up, it makes me wish I could reach through the screen and snap one or two fingers. It seriously pisses me off.

Question for Case and SecretMaker

(Anonymous) 2025-10-10 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think we could post these in a separate place than the General Comments? Like it's own thread like we have for Games or something? Not like we have a really busy GC here but I feel like sometimes comments that come in after the Secret Thread can get a little lost.

No big deal if not! It was just a thought. Thank you both for all you do for this comm!

I’m asexual. That’s what I tell people.

But if we’re getting technical I am graysexual - every once in a blue moon, particularly when I feel sad stressed and limerent I end up feeling weird random bouts of attraction. I fear my body thinks “if nothing is going right/you’ll die at least have sex before going” and turns on that side. Pun not intended.

This is about a celebrity. A younger guy. I’m too ashamed to name him (cursed with falling for 6ft tall twinks) but I will say I stared at his back for 15 minutes and could probably do it for hours just thinking Holy shit what a back I could CRY

I have never been more glad that I'm a lone wolf Swiftie. In years past I've occasionally wished for others to squee with (and definitely a group to go to a tour or the tour movie with). But now, the negative hoopla around her new album is just everywhere.

I like the new album. It's not my favorite, but it's solid and I'm enjoying it, and I don't need anyone harshing my happy with it. And by God it is so easy to just not click on links to stuff I know I'm not gonna like to see.

Maybe it's hindsight bias, but I feel like I knew that Life of a Showgirl wasn't going to be very good. Like, from the second she announced it.

1. She's happy. She never writes her best when she's happy.
2. It's her 12th album. Yes every album has crazy high expectations on it, but TS13 is going to have them even more. By a lot. If I were Taylor, I would be hoarding any song that even seemed *slightly* genius for that album.

The upshot of this is that Showgirl turned out to be way better than I expected, and it's a nice surprise! At the first listen it was just...fine, but at this point I genuinely like it.

(I mean, I wish someone had slapped some sense into her about Wood, but one cringey song is not the end of the world or her career.)

Sometimes fandom Gatekeeping is a good thing. Look me in the eye and honestly tell me that you don't wish someone had kept Elon, Bezos, and Thiel out of Star Trek and Culture fandoms. Told ya so.

Nancy A Collins really did have a gift for book titles. I mean, even after all these years the phrase "sunglasses after dark" still pops into my brain unbidden.

The older I get, the more I prefer r/shittydaystrom as my fandom place rather than any of the more "serious" communities.

Deep Space 9 is so good at deconstructing Star Trek, that it, with the episode Valiant, successfully deconstructed the entire premise of the JJ reboot a whole decade before that movie was even made. Mind you, Futurama managed to deconstruct a key point from Into Darkness with its ep Deep South too... so maybe The JJ-Trek just wasn't built very well to start with.

I learned that Jude Law had a main role in a historically inaccurate and insulting movie that harmed real people by promoting wrong ideas and stereotypes and teaching viewers wrong ideas about history. His Watson is dead for me now. No, I can't separate art from reality when art has his face.

Henry Cavill both looks and acting is so boring. I'm going to give the new Wicher a chance now. I saw Hemsworth and I don't understand why everybody hates him. Witcher's been a clown show that's not faithful to books since forever, it's not going to be any worse with the new actor.
I like Cavill as a person but seeing him on screen gets a nope from me. I even left the cinema in the middle of Superman VS Batman because I couldn't take this movie anymore.

I started a rewatch of TNG but everyone looks so old and wrinkly. I used to ship Picard and Q but wasn't exsited about them this time. Is it that the screens became huge? Is it that I became old and started noticing ageing signs that I didn't noticed when I was young? No idea. It all feels dated, characters look old, plots simple and presictable.

At least I still like TOS even though it's ancient. McCoy/Spock, anyone?

I liked the SW sequels in general. Yes, there was too much copying of the OT, but there was still some uniqueness and some of the characters, like Rey, really shone. But I cannot stand Poe. A poor attempt at copying the success of Han, but he lacks almost all of Han's charm and ability to instantly judge a situation. Even aside from his plot in TLJ, which should have gotten him court-martialed. Poe just wasn't a well written character at all.

I genuinely like with Hulu dub for Gintama and I was thrilled to see that not only did they dub more episodes, but they’re also dubbing Mr. Ginpachi’s Zany Class. I haven’t felt this happy in a long time.

I genuinely don't know how anyone can read the New Jedi Order and think it was more faithful to the original trilogy than the sequels. Fans have rose colored glasses when it comes to the EU. There were great parts, but also really terrible parts. Just like the sequels.

I used to love Brian Lumley's Necroscope books, I get they were problematic even at time of publication, but they've become so dated and out of step that I just can't enjoy them anymore. And I don't know how to feel about this.

I super hate I have to put disclaimers about everything being problematic when I want to discuss older fandom stuff all the time, just to avoid some internet warrior jumping on me. Can we not just take it as read that everything is problematic in some way, especially the older stuff, and not self-flagellate over it. I'm gonna go watch Gunga Din, and fuck y'all because it is a fun movie.

(TW: Sexual abuse, CSA, pedophlilia)

28 Years Later had a character whose gang looks are based on notorious monster Jimmy Savile, and this character is going to get an even bigger role in the sequel.

I know that the rage-infected UK is culturally stuck in time before the virus, when Savile's crimes weren't revealed, but real world filmmakers should know better. It's not like there weren't any other popular culture icons to model the gang after.
